Funny you should mention Erikson. Though that wasn't the author I was thinking about, I did pick up one of his books in the Malazan series and just got to the point where I couldn't continue it. I think what put me off was it had gotten to the place where all the important characters had reached a high level of significance which had them standing around and chatting instead of doing anything interesting. I HAVE read a few of these books and I recognized several of the characters from previous dips into the world of the Malazan empire so I wasn't totally without context, but it was just sooooo chatty. The book even did a fairly good job getting me up to speed, I felt, there were cool ideas, I renewed interest in old friends and how they might fare in the future and yet... I just got sick of all the talking and thinking about what to say while talking bla bla bla bla. Dialog is important. Don't get me wrong, but it just seemed so overwrought and lacking in action. I don't know if I will ever do a series. Hey, I don't even know if I'll ever publish and if so how. But I have to say that a series, while it may be profitable, can be dreck by the end of it. LSO |
