Hi there,

A good question indeed!

Well, it all depends on the kind of story you're about to write. It is still only in your head - you have a general idea of the main theme, the era and the style. Normally one would stick to the traditional way of presenting the story e.g. beginning/middle/end. I found out through the years that Fantasy or History stories are made to be more interesting if the story begins in the past or future, then coming back to the present in bits and ending at the end in a 'big crescendo'.

The reason a book or a story are divided into sections is to help the writer keep the tension equally throughout the piece and also to prevent a prolonged middle section and a 'blitz' ending.

Another reason for contest organizers to add the line about beginning/middle/end to the rules of the contest is that many members write something that reads like a personal diary; the story doesn't lead anywhere doesn't have a climax and doesn't end properly.
