Reading is free. One can set privacy level to the different settings such as "registered user and above only, registered author and above only, etc.

The only stories I know of one has to have a paid membership to write is interactives and books. The fact interactives went from free to paid is due to server costs. Since there are a lot of past posts about it, I will sum it up the best I can. Interactives are a small part of the site and yet carry one of the biggest server loads. Also due to the sensitive nature of much of the content of most of those interactives, supporting the cost with ads is not easy. As far as I know, it will not change anytime soon.
