By and large, I would recommend editing the piece at least twice. The first time to correct anything large and structural and the second time to polish the grammar.
No piece is perfect, but there comes a point when your tweaks are making very little difference to it. That's the time to let someone else cast a cold eye over it and offer advice - or laud your skill.
