Butterfly Garden

Mindy stepped outside and gazed, her mouth nearly dropping with awe. The yard was alive with butterflies of every description, who wavered about like the fairies she’d seen in children’s books, so many and so omnipresent she could not absorb them in one glance. Mindy followed her eyes around the magical yard.
Resting in the wild cherry and hawthorn trees or flitting about nearby were butterflies whose wings shaded from black above to pale blue below that her Aunt Patsy had told her were Red-spotted Purples. Red-spotted Purples liked cherry and hawthorn trees, Patsy said. Also around the cherry and the ash trees too were the big yellow and black striped butterflies she now knew were called Eastern Tiger Swallowtails. Eastern Tiger Swallowtails like cherries too, and also ash trees. In the herb garden fluttered Black Swallowtails, velvety black butterflies with white spots and blue accents lining their lower wings. They liked the carrot, dill, parsley and anise plants, Patsy said, and sure enough, they hovered in that patch of the garden. Monarchs, unmistakably orange and black, flickered about, and they liked the milkweed scattered around the yard. Aunt Patsy had told Mindy everything she knew about butterflies, and Patsy had learned everything she knew from their great-grandmother Violet. Violet had belonged to the state conservation and gardening societies and left Aunt Patsy this house.
Mindy’s cousin Dan had told her that many people paid money for butterflies that’d been preserved on cards. When she acted curious, he said you caught the butterfly in a net and then pinched it under its little head. But wouldn’t that kill them? she’d asked. Dan said he’d pay her. As she watched the butterflies flicker about fairy-like, Mindy knew she didn’t want to kill them so they could be preserved, still and lifeless.
