For me, nothing beats the company of writers. It is, after all, the reason I joined WDC and it's working - I've produced more in the last three months than I did in the three years before that. It's almost as though it reminds me of what it is to be a writer, as though I had somehow forgotten how to do it. I listen to what they're saying (usually through reading their work) and it somehow provides the drive to write.
Is it the need to compete? Yes, partly. The urge to show off? Yes, that's there too. To imitate or do homage? Yes, that too. To do something different from what others are doing? Oh, definitely that. To enter the discussion? Yes, of course it's that as well. And there are probably other reasons that I haven't thought of.
But it doesn't matter. The point is that it works (for me). I don't care if my reasons for needing the company of other writers are so awful and horrible that I dare not even think of them. All that matters is that it gets me writing.
