Forgive me if I misinterpreted your post, but this is my opinion:

Of course taboo is a state of mind, it's also 100% in the eye of the beholder. For example, I read American Psycho and barely batted an eye (it really is a funny book, by the way), wheras some Bible Belt grandmother who happened to come across it and read a few pages might give herself a heart attack. Taboo is whatever you think it is.

Who says what is and isn't taboo? if children's stories are any example, apparently child neglect Hansel and Gretel, having a parent get shot Bambi, and breaking and entering Goldilocks and the Three Bears are OK topics for kids to read about, but many of the parents who read these stories to their kids would never let them watch South Park. Why? Too much bad language.

The idea of taboo is just another example of the hypocrisy that society as a whole exhibits all the time. Oh, well, at least it gives us weird folk something to call our own*Smile*
