During the battle of the Somme and Verdun MILLIONS of Artillery shells of all types were fired, by large calibre artillery guns, on both sides.
The bombardment which preceeded the Somme opening offensive day, lasted seven days. Allied command were certain the enemy troops were all destroyd and did not survive it...Alas...It was not so...
