How did magic get here?

Rather than just throwing magic in the world, why not add a strange origin? And what impact has that had on Earth?

A meteor storm: One day, a mysterious meteor storm fell upon the entire earth and nearly wiped out human civilization. However, sites of these meteor impacts have become the source of magic in the world, which has in turn allowed human civilization to grow and adapt to the destroyed world. These impact sites are heavily guarded by the people of the world

Invention: A government and/or corporate entity created magic for its own purposes, but it has been unleashed into the world and now everyone is trying to gain control over it for themselves.

Underground: Magic has always been around, however as human civilization became more advanced, a secret society was formed by elite wizards and witches who collectively cast a spell to make all people in the world forget about magic. Everyone can still use magic, in theory, but they have to know how of its existence first. That's why the order still exists and preserves magic knowledge in case the world needs magic again.
