Those are the important questions, of course, both in the context of this poem (and photograph), and indeed in any instance of archaeological or anthropological exploration. Anything created by the human hand must have "Meaning," and anything intended to be viewed or read or seen by other humans begs the question "Will they understand?" Example, abstract art or sculpture: presumably the artist understands and intends the meaning, but does anyone else? Example, creative writing: I understand what I write (presumably), you understand what you write, but do we understand each other? (Generic example, not personal). Sometimes the cave inscriptions are quite clear; other times, not so (which is why we have the theory of Ancient Aliens, I presume).
