Weather Events

Some of us have experienced some serious weather events in our lifetime. Right now Florida is preparing for a hurricane. It's hard to tell if it will be a serious weather event or if the forecasters are making a big deal for airtime. Either way, it doesn't hurt to be prepared.

Certainly, whether you experience some sort of event, see it on the internet, or in a movie, you can somewhat relate to what is being shown and should be able to reasonably describe how it looks, feels, or even smells. If you know a scene like that will be played out in your story, spend a little time finding just the right description of what is happening. Fully immerse your reader in the scene. Using the five senses will surround your reader in the scene. Feel the wind pushing your back, the ocean spraying your face, choke on the smell of smoke and feel the howl of the sirens in your ears.

How can this involve your characters? Arch enemies, stuck in a snowstorm together. A vacationing family stuck on a cruise ship in a violent weather event. Even animals face challenges against nature. Jot some plot ideas down while watching the news, there are a ton of ideas and characters to collect.

So batten down the hatches, and Write On!

This month's question: What weather event have you used to move your story arc?

Excerpt: On thin-bladed, pale earth, she laid her weight right on me. After half a block running, I finally let the spirited girl tumble down on my torso. She reared back like she just roped a calf. Hot bodies pulsating, slowly our breathing descended. I regulated air intake faster, before she could utter, “you're as irrational as you are impossible to catch, Lee.”

 The Leader of Javin  (18+)
With some individuals, it’s hard to make them tell the truth. I’m not one of them.
#2281689 by PureSciFi

Excerpt: “Please, stop trying to kill me like this. You don’t need to do it this way,” I said as I started screaming again at what they were doing to me.

Sibyl  (E)
a sassy black mermaid, 622 wods
#2281668 by ridinghhood-p.boutilier

Excerpt: It was a dark and stormy night. Well, actually it was dusk with a very light drizzle. I was sitting on my backyard dock swathed in mosquito repellant and protected by an enormous golf umbrella.

Drive  (18+)
A summer fling, long ago. (Rhythms & Writing, July 2022)
#2277769 by L_P

Excerpt: Distant summer lingers in the garage, in the scent of grass clippings and spilled oil. My aging sedan complains as I pull into the driveway. It must be wondering why I’m not staying quietly at home as I usually do, watching television or retreating to bed with a familiar book. Why I’m not leaving the car to its own rest, to the rusty creep of age spots along the fender, to the gradual stiffening of joints as winter’s frost advances a bit more each night.

Instead, here I am, driving along these twilight October streets, thinking of yesterdays.

 The Copenhagen Faux Pas  (18+)
Young boy rebels against a thankless father.
#2244488 by jackson

Excerpt: At first the idea had excited him, later on after he had turned over the probabilities entailed in the event, his face had turned sour with skepticism. He knew he was going to have to walk all the way to Williamson, in the heat of July, without anything to drink and no expectations of obtaining anything to drink. His Daddy would count out his money down to the last penny for the purchase of that Copenhagen, nary a thought that his son might be thirsty or hungry would cross his mind.

Excerpt: As we started up the slope, pushing our way through the briers, I felt a prick on my foot. It didn't hurt very much, but when I raised my foot to examine the wound, I froze. Two tiny holes about 1/4inch apart were positioned on the top of my foot. I panicked.

I screamed at Carrie, "A snake just bit me! It's poisonous, and I'm going to die!"

Excerpt: The Ceiling over my island of Shard is the shade of a bruised eggplant, at the edge of rot. The clouds sag as if they carry rocks in their pockets, yet still, they keep their precious stones and stumble over the hills, drunk on their own moisture, without ever leaking a single drop.

Halloween Battle in Shibuya  (13+)
A demon witch from another world comes to conquer.
#2235098 by Kotaro

Excerpt: Six of us had been ordered to prepare for a battle against alien demonic forces. In order to increase our aggressiveness, all of us had agreed to choose the essence of a great baseball player to add to our positronic brains. Needless to say we loved winning, and the best victory was in a battle to the death.

Ask & Answer

This month's question: What weather event have you used to move your story arc?
Answer below *Down* Editors love feedback! *Heart*

Last month's "Action/Adventure Newsletter (August 31, 2022) question: Do you connect with other authors during contests? How has it benefitted you?

Elfin Dragon-finally published : I do sometimes connect with other authors during contests. A lot of times it's usually been about reviews either for what they've posted or what I've posted. Sometimes it's a bit more and I make a new friend. *Smile*

THANKFUL SONALI 17 WDC YEARS! : Those who have responded to the same prompt and review my work have a lot of useful tips to give.

Serena Blade : I have not. okay, maybe once, but I am evil because I forgot his name. it was nice for a brief second. until he beat me. he deserved it. he is good.

AmyJo- only 2 steps behind - : In my few weeks here, I have gotten to share with authors - through reviews, sharing stories, personal things. I love this community!

N.A Miller : never have... I have curbed my contest participation a touch.... My material is not exactly contest worthy... When I did participate however, I found them usually as a peer review of the material but nothing that really was helpful... so on the benefit of it... I can say no.

Thanks to everyone responding to the newsletters questions, your feedback is much appreciated! Leger~
