About This Newsletter

Fantasy Newsletter by Dawn

Discussing the amazing opportunities provided by members on WDC for contests, whether the genre is speculative fiction or not. Taking the opportunity to enter fantasy (or other types) even when that's not the focus of the contest is a great way to keep writing.

Letter from the editor

One of the things I enjoy most about this site is the contests that different people host. While I don't enter contests as much as I would like, it's something I do as much as possible. I even judge an occasional official site contest and run another on the side. I have one longer contest I'd like to run again once my offline life doesn't interfere with being a good judge/reviewer. As a writer, the contests on WDC help keep me writing and that is something I appreciate.

Not all of the things I write are speculative fiction. However, when I enter a contest, it's not always a matter of what genre is required. Not every contest has a genre specification. It is also possible to write a story with more than one genre. Depends on the prompt, contest and judge for overall preference and entry qualification.

The site official contests are good examples because, other than Journey Through the Genres, they don’t often require or limit the genre used. When given a picture or a quotation as a prompt, or even music when that one comes around, is is often possible to submit a fantasy, sci-fi or even horror with the right prompt. As long as it follows the rules on content rating, word count, and such, it should be good to submit. This gives the opportunity to create our crazy, speculative stories to share with different people on the site.

Not that I want to discourage from entering the genre specific contests either. There are science fiction and fantasy contests available on the site almost every month. I bet the judges would be happy to see any entries that fit their prompts and follow the guidelines. But those of us with non speculative fiction prompts would also enjoy an entry. The romance and adult contests also have plenty of room for stories set in strange worlds or with non-human characters taking center stage. I have a soft spot for love stories amongst elves (dragonlance/lord of the rings type but I have read a couple Santa’s helper ones too).

Part of the benefit in our genre is the openness to explore and the creativity allowed in not just the world but the characters as well. Whether it is an action story with airships and wood fae, dragons finding the right mate in an epic fantasy or even witches with a detective agency, there is room for the stories here. So check out all of the contests and share a little magic or science with the judges. Have fun writing and enter a few contests when you can.

Ask & Answer

Are there any contests you enter with fantasy/sci-fi that aren't genre specific?

Last month, I wrote a newsletter about the topic of home. Here are the comments sent for that:

Comment by BIG BAD WOLF is hopping
Home can mean all kinds of things.

Comment by StephBee - House Targaryen
Home is New England and a lot of my characters that I write have a connection to New England.

Comment by Aennaytte: Free & Wild in GoT
Analyzing what "home" really means is a good exercise for authors. It should be a question in a character interview sheet. You mentioned a few different places that represent home for you. A fictional character should also have a few places to call home and those could be used to give the character a well-rounded personality.
