Reading an item on WDC, often the static items (poetry, prose, chapters, stories, etc) is not just a good idea. It is very encouraged because submitting reviews has many benefits. However, there are some details that can be easily missed. The creation date might not be something that comes to mind, right away, especially for the newbie because the items in your portfolio are also new, if there are any. Those that have been writing for years, well, it's hard to tell in the random read when the item was created.
I will admit, some of us have portfolios that might be intimidating. It is easy to get lost in the bigger portfolios for the writers who have been on here a long time. To be honest... I can get lost in my own portfolio. There is a lot. At times, I have gotten reviews for something I do not remember. Before responding, I have to re-read my own item in order to know what they are talking about in the review.
Where can you find this information?
In the box, under the title on the right hand side there are a few details about each item on the site. This includes the content rating. There is also size of the item (related to length). Then you will see two dates. There is the creation date. This is when the item was first created. The second one is when the item was last modified. Both dates can be useful to know.
So, while some stories or poems are new, others might be very much not that. Then there is the next question: Why should it matter?
Good question. While it's not a big deal, it is something to consider when sending a review. Is it a big deal, whether something is old or new? Not really. Not a big deal. However, there are some details that are influenced by the year they are written or even month. Also, as people grow, the writing changes.
Not everything will receive edits or changes. Some things are a one time, for fun type of item. Maybe it was written for a contest. After the judging is over, maybe the writer doesn't plan to do anything more. You never know. That item might have no purpose, other than that initial point of creation. Or it could be something the writer plans to develop over time. In some ways, that is part of the fun with reading or reviewing static items. You don't know what the writer plans to do, you don't know if it was off the cuff item. There is a lot we don't know when reading the item here on the site.
The creation date is just one minor detail. Just something to consider when composing thoughts for producing a review. Take it into consideration.
