Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

WritingML is the mark-up language used within Writing.Com that allows you to enhance your writing on our web-based system. "Writing.Com 101" contains all the information one needs to use the WritingML system.
Just what is xxxxML? The ML denotes (M)arkup (L)anguage, Many types of such languages exist, a widely known one is HTML, or HyperText Markup Language, the standard markup language for documents designed to be displayed in a web browser.
A markup language is an encoding system consisting of a set of symbols inserted in a text document to control its structure, formatting, or the relationship between its parts. Markup is often used to control the display of the document or to enrich its content to facilitate automated processing. A markup language is a set of rules governing what markup information may be included in a document and how it is combined with the content of the document in a way to facilitate use by humans and computer programs.
In addition to information in "Writing.Com 101" , many members have penned How To articles as to how to use WritingML to enhance one's writing effort. Since I'm not writing this newsletter as a tutorial for actually creating links and such, take a moment to check out some of the following examples:

You can search How To articles for additional sources as well.
Formatting buttons appear across the top of most writing or editing textboxes within WDC to facilitate your editing process using WritingML. These buttons are shortcuts for creating and modifying attributes such as bold, italic, sized text, among others. Hovering your cursor over a specific button identifies which format is manifest. Using such buttons is the easiest way to format and enhance your writing.
Making your items and other members linkable can also be done using WritingML, though it takes a little more effort. But IMHO it's a short learn. Check out https://www.writing.com/main/tools/action/writingml for specific examples of linking.
The WritingML link will also show you how to embed things, such as images, photos, and audio, in your writing, AND miscellaneous items including randomly rotating items and displaying a countdown in your writing.
Finally, there are members who have been using WritingML for five, ten and twenty years. If you need assistance, ask for help. WDC is a very helpful community; check out one of the Help forums.

From Elfin Dragon-finally published  : So, though I'm not really a Newbie, I thought I'd make an appearance. I've been on a hiatus from WDC for about a year or so. Partly because I was working on my poetry books and partly because I didn't feel like writing. I looked at my last writing and realized I hadn't written anything for almost 2 years. So, here I am, jumping back into the pond, as it were, and feeling like a Newbie again.
Well, welcome back! I can understand divided interests having several of my own.
From tracker  : It was a wild anniversary week. I participated here and there. I found almost too much was going on. It kept my head spinning. I had a hard time deciding what to do or write. I was trampled by those jumping at the chance to submit their writing. How did I miss being able to give a free MB for seven days? I hope I will be better prepared next year. Good newsletter, Jace. Congrats and thanks.

From Elisa the Bunny Stik  : I usually don't participate in the festivities since they coincide (a lot) with the Minnesota State Fair. That event is a marquee event on my photography calendar. That said, I did give out free merit badges on five of the seven days. I at least managed to make that work.
I understand about timing. I returned from vacation on 31 August expecting to participate in all the festivities. But I was overcome by events resulting from vacation. There's always next year.
From H❀pe of House Lannister : I joined just in time for the celebration activities. *confetti* Was a fun start to my time here, snapping up the daily tokens and earning some merit badges too. A kick start launch! Thank you everyone who put the festivities in place.

From Riverd0g  : I had a lot of fun, I bought ten dollars in gift points twice and got $2 back. I gave some merit badges and did a lot of reviews. I got close to ten dollars in gift points for my reviews!
