Every year in September, the hubbub starts. Let's do October Prep for NaNo. In October, the prep leads into the big one-month event of NaNoWriMo. You have to choose somewhat early on whether you will or you won't. Whether prepared or pantsed, NaNoWriMo isn't over until November 30 and you could still pick that.

However, if you haven't started NaNoing yet, you are probably not going to start. If you're on the fence and want to get some advice from people in the midst of it, go check out "The WDC NanoLounge"  for some first hand experiences.

From where I'm standing, there are many reasons why you shouldn't do NaNo this time around. Several of the reasons are listed in the Editor's Picks below. There are writing contests and activities that vie for your attention and participation.

You can use the excitement of writing the whole month and dedicate yourself to entering contests. Rather than hammer out about 1,660 words per day of a rough first draft, take time for your craft. Write, edit, polish and submit your best short pieces.

There is also the option to take the time to pick apart carefully review the work of another writer here on the site. Ideally, it would lead to a collaboration in which you can mutually benefit from each other's skills. Nobody can see what you can see. And if a writer can't describe things to you so that you can see them, the writer needs to know that.

Replies to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "Back it Up!"  that asked: How do you keep all your precious words safe?

I do hope you are doing well today. I save all my writing on a USB device. I am always afraid of losing stuff like you mentioned. This past week I tried using Microsoft Word's Online Version but personally I rather use the one on my Computer I personally did not much care for it. Additionally to me saving things on my USB drive once there then I put it in my Portfolio here since I already have it on something non cloud based if that makes sense. Additionally though I am going to do the auto save option you mentioned. I do believe word has that and I think that is a great idea. Thanks again for sharing. Your newsletters are always helpful and uplifting. Thanks again. You rock. Have a beautiful blessed day my friend. :) :)

Hello Bill. It's good to know that you are making sure your writing is backed up. Remember that USB drives can deteriorate over time. It appears you have a handle on double back ups, so you should be good.

Sadly, none of the options beyond sitting down and putting pen to paper will ever create a 100% safe first draft. Word is a good option as long as you ensure it saves frequently. That prevents most losses.
