** SPIRITUAL WRITING **

Part Two

Through the process introduced in my last newsletter, you are now armed with a gazillion or three ideas for items to write. Some of these will naturally appeal more than others.

If you missed my last issue, you can view it here: "Spiritual Newsletter (August 2, 2006)

At this stage, you can start writing, or you can research markets.

Many of us start writing, in fact I estimate the majority of us do -- I certainly do it myself. Then I try to find a market that matches what I've written. This can be problemmatical. The item may be a good subject match for a market, but your approach is incorrect, or the piece is too long, too short, or a story when they wanted a poem. It can be difficult to match existing items to a market. However I find my inspiration works better this way.

The alternative is to first look at markets with the lists you've created as a storehouse of ideas in hand. This is the next step in the Spiritual Writing process I've chosen to focus on.

<< Step 1 >>

Arm yourself with resources for finding markets. The Writer's Market, online websites (Google "Paying Markets"), local publications, and anything else you can think of. It is a very time consuming process, so don't rush, and be methodical.

<< Step 2 >>

Work through your market listings and make a note of any that interest you. You could use little sticky flags (post-its) or a highlighter. I keep a notebook and jot down the market name, and where it is listed. Then I add a summary of what the market is interested in.
eg. Alive Now - 2005 Writer's Market, pg 714.
          Poetry: reflection/meditation.

<< Step 3 >>

Now play a game of mix and match. What titles/ideas from your lists would suit any of the markets you're interested in?
For example, my title reached from the sample list in my last issue, "The First Morning (P), might work for 'Alive Now'. It is a potential market.

This could be enough to launch your fingers into an overactive mission typing (or writing) the item that springs to your mind. If not, continue on mixing and matching ideas to markets until the ignition fires.

If nothing in particular creates a spark, choose one pairing and work on it as an exercise anyway. This is good for becoming a disciplined writer and you might be surprised with how it develops.

A few extra tips:

*Bullet* Don't let your original lists restrict your options. If you originally thought a title might make a good poem, and now think the idea would be great as an article - go for it!

*Bullet* New ideas and possibilities will spring up as you look at your first notes. Add any fresh ideas as they come, keeping a dynamic resource you can always refer to. You could even go a step further and note beside any ideas used the name of the item written, date used, or some other comment.

*Bullet* If you just can't imagine writing to a set market, then try this as an alternative.
Write your inspired piece, then find a market it most seems to most suitable for. Then in a new item, document, or page, rewrite your original to comply with the angle/tone/style/subject/interest of the chosen market. You will end up with two potentially marketable pieces. *Wink*

In part three of this subject, I will look at how to balance your beliefs with your writing.

You can never have too many ideas! *Wink* Not all of the things you write down will create an excitement in you to write them, but it's great to let the mind loose to consider the possibilities.

*Flower2* I am writing a book called "Second Son" that I feel the lord is writing through me. I am in need of some assistance from someone, could I ask for your help, Puditat? This is the encounter you have been waiting for your whole life, and the lord puts us where he needs us when he needs us. I will be waiting to here from you.
