Wintering

Wintering is the idea that we slow down to survive. Animals do it to get through the colder months, and I think we can take a lesson from them.

Wintering doesn't have to be done in Winter or during cold weather. It can be any time in our lives when we need a break, when we need a period of reflection or self-care. It can be anything from taking some quiet time to a period of isolation or embracing things that bring us comfort and healing, which can include social activities or hobbies. It's not a period of doing "nothing," but a time for doing what heals us or brings us joy.

This need for calm and recuperating can happen during the Winter season, and in that case, we can try to prepare for it and have a plan in place. We can gather our comfort items and have them ready for our spare time, or we can have a plan in place for that time. Maybe there's a reason we make resolutions and plans for the New Year? It's a great time to focus on our goals and reflect on our current situation and what we want from the future!

One way to keep track of how we're feeling and what our needs might be is to journal or just to write on a regular basis. I find a lot of my emotions come out in writing, whether I intend to or not. Try some writing exercises and see what happens!

I don't think completely shutting down and doing "nothing" during our Wintering times is particularly healthy except in rare cases. It's good to slow down at times, but slow is still moving forward, you know?

So if you find yourself in a slower time, remember it can be good to keep writing & reading and interacting with others.

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*
