Imagine finding a doorway to another universe? What would it be like? Would it be like our own world or filled with fantastic scenes and creatures?

Parallel worlds, also called alternate realities or other dimensions, are common in fantasy and sci-fi. Examples include the TV shows "Sliders" and "Stranger Things" and stories such as "Through the Looking Glass" and "The Chronicles of Narnia."

Parallel worlds also can be a great part of horror, because walking into an unknown world would be terrifying in many ways. Your characters might find themselves in a lot of trouble because they don't know the rules of the other dimension. Maybe they have walked into a reality where vampires, werewolves, or zombies exist. They might have entered a universe where primitive people will accuse them of being witches or demons. Maybe the people they think of as friends or allies are evil in this dimension. They might be in a world where the Nazis won World War II.

The portal to the other world can be almost anything you imagine. In "Through the Looking Glass" it was a mirror. In "The Wizard of Oz," Dorothy and her house are swept into Oz by a tornado. In the Narnia books, the ways to enter Narnia vary from book to book, including a wardrobe cabinet, a railway platform, a picture, and magic rings. In the show "Sliders" characters enter parallel worlds through a vortex activated by a handheld timer. In "Buffy the Vampire Slayer," the key to alternate dimensions is a human being, Buffy's younger sister, Dawn.

Some stories take place entirely within an alternate reality. Dan Willis's "Arcane Casebook" series is set in an alternate version of Depression Era New York City in which magic is real and the most powerful people are sorcerers.

If a doorway to other worlds opens, remember that it might work in both directions. If humans can travel to another dimension, maybe creatures of that dimension might travel to ours.

Something to try: Write a horror story in which characters travel to a parallel world.
