 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com.
We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

Last week I attended a Rural Libraries Conference in Traverse City, Michigan. Though I learn many new things at these conferences, my favorite part is when we get to hear an author speak. I vacuum up everything he or she says and walk away feeling totally inspired. These authors seem like every day people, like you and me. And the author who spoke last week (Jo Dereske) said she received over 300 rejections before publishing her first book! Now she authors a series of ten books called Adventures of Miss Helma Zukas. No surprise that Helma Zukas is a fictional librarian character. 
My second favorite session this year was a presentation by a lady from Greenville, Michigan: Maureen Burns. I love listening to motivational speakers. She has also authored a few books including Run with Your Dreams which has been a best-seller published in French, Spanish, and Braille. I have not read the book, but after hearing her speak, I most certainly will.  Her laughter, smiles, and humor certainly are contagious!
I know I talk about Writer's Block and writing insentives quite often, but truly, can we ever get enough inspiration? If you have an opportunity to listen to a motivational speaker or an author that is visiting your local book store, I highly recommend that you take the time to listen to their presentation. If anything, you will walk away smiling.

Excerpt: It was late afternoon on a hot July day as the sun scorched the ground at a sleepy little farm just outside of Abilene. There was a small two bedroom house in need of repairs and a barn that used to house live stock but now the roof had caved in. As Johnny sat on his horse on the hill overlooking the farm he knew there was nothing here but memories and ghosts. Ghosts of the past that haunted him every night. Johnny had dreamt of this moment for eight long years.
Excerpt: A girl scout skipped home from a meeting one evening. The whole time, she was singing the new song that she heard there. The song was about a rabbit who hopped through a forest, and killed field mice for fun. Eventually in the song, the good fairy got mad at the rabbit and turned her into a goon. When she came into her house singing the song, her grandmother gave her a look of scolding.
Excerpt: Snowy trees gave echo to a feral howl, thickening the cry to a bestial timbre and animalistic fury. Unlike a wolf’s guttural shout, it was but short-lived, and only a solitary sound, much different than the war call of a hungering pack of canines. Even the birds rose to the skies, following the reverberating sound into the star-lit night.
“Hey,” a scruffy, lithe man with thin hair turned to the other man at the half-constructed campsite, his cheeks wind burnt to a raw crimson. “Did you hear that?”
Excerpt: For many days they sailed, and the weather was good. But then came a storm, and the ship was blown off course. Soon, out of the fog and mist they saw land, and they sailed toward it. They dropped anchor and the prince got in a rowboat, and he went to the new land. He wanted to know if it would make him happy.
But when he stepped onto the shore, the prince fell under a spell, for in that land was an evil witch. He walked up the beach and into a forest and there he saw the most beautiful woman he had ever seen. She beckoned to him and he followed her further into the forest.
Excerpt: You know, it's not easy being a normal teenage girl. You've got school, friends, enemies, and most importantly BOYS! You know, the ones you fall madly in love with, and find out their a total jerk. Yeah those kind of boys.
Excerpt: Clack! The sound of the two practice swords slamming against each other rang out across the courtyard as the young man and young woman circled each other tensely, sweat running down their faces in the midday sun under their chain mail.

I'm sure you remember the Mad Hatter always running around to no end. Remember we had a late start to Winter. Keep the faith, Spring is coming soon.
The Mad Hatter? Oh, yes indeed!  That would have been an excellent description of me in March! The Mad Cubby! Though things are still a bit hectic, the weather has finally decided to treat us with Springtime! Now... if the wind would just tame down a bit!

My favorite book I've read this year (so far) is Terry Pratchett's Thud! . I got it on sale at a bookstore that was going out of business. I had read Hogfather last year and really liked Pratchett's writing, so I thought I'd give him another try. I wasn't disappointed.
I have not read any of Terry Pratchett's books, but I do have five of his titles at the library. I just checked, and the most recent one I have ordered is A Hat Full of Sky, copyright 2004. I just noticed there are two more that follow this book called The Wee Free Men and Wintersmith with excellent reviews! Gee, I'd better get on the ball and order them along with the two titles you have recommended, too, as I do not carry those books at the present either. Thanks so much for sharing this author with us! BTW, I have read the reviews on Pratchett's The Johnny Maxwell Trilogy for children ages 9 - 11, and they were all very good reviews, one expressing the reader will not be disappointed.

One of my favorite books that I have read this year (I've read over thirty, and it is so hard to choose just one! ) is 'The Book Thief' by Markus Zusak. He creates a fascinating, but still believable, set of characters and he has truely mastered the art of description. The narrator of the story is 'Death' and think this is one of the most inspired ideas I have ever come across. The book is set in Nazi Germany, which was refreshing to me as most WWII books are set in Polan, Denmark etc. and ne
I have this book at my library but haven't read it yet. It had good reviews so I ordered it. I also believe it has been on the NY Best Seller List and also received an award. Thank you for sharing it. I've been thinking about reading it (along with about a zillion other books! I appreciate your recommendation and summary and I bet other readers will also add this title to their list.

I thought you might want to include A-1 Academy in your list of good links for newbies to check out. It has everything from computer classes, WDC tutorials, and writing classes for prose and poetry. There is something for every level of writer, from beginner to expert.

Well . . . as for your question Cubby, I think the best book I have read this year is Twilight by Stephanie Meyer! The excitment! The danger! The drama! The suspense! I loved it!
Aha! I have that at my library in YA (Young Adult) Section. And, it's been on the NY Best Seller List! I have not read it, but Stephanie Meyer also has another book with Bella as the main character called New Moon written in 2006 and on the current NY Best Seller List. Though I am not a young adult ((())), I do enjoy reading YA material. Thanks so much for the recommendation!

My favorite book I've read this year is titled, "The Imagineer Workout" by the Disney Imagineers. Not only do the Imagineers offer key advice for almost any creative field, they offer exercises and activities to keep the brain refreshed! If you can find it, I definitely recommend it to anyone and everyone here.
The Imagineering Workout: Excercises To Shape Your Creative Muscles by Peggy Van Pelt (EDT). Thank you for the recommendation! I am ordering it for the library I work in. I also noticed there is one coming out for kids in June: The Imagineering Workout for Kids. Sounds like a good addition for anyone's collection. Again, thank you!

I use to find that I was most creative in the late hours of the night.now I find my self just tired then. Now it hits any time it wants to and the creative bug doesn't care if I'm in the middle of talking to some one or working it just zaps me like electricity or lightening. an now instead of poetry its short stories( horror, sci-fi) its wierd.

I finally got around to reading "The Secret Life of Bees," an absolutely beautiful and vivid book of one girl's look to learn about her mother's past. The language is poetic, a wonderfully written book. I recommend it to anyone who hasn't read it.
I've decided to read that book after I'm finished with Across the High Lonesome. In fact, I've already checked it out of the library!

This one is my favorite so far this year although I have to admit my book devouring this year has been far more minimalist then I'd like. I must make time to do more reading.

What a great and inspiring newsletter! I'm always reading books on writing, and while I've indeed found them helpful, nothing helps you learn to write better than actually writing!
I now have a few more favorites to add to my list (your selection of exercises) and I have to thank you for including my own "Exercise the Mind" in your list! Now that the semester is over, and I am taking the summer off from school, I plan on jumping back in to my weekly writing exercies!
