Once there was a pumpkin who loved to review. I bet you never knew pumpkins liked to read, did you? *Shock* (Okay, just humor me here for a moment! *Laugh*)

The pumpkin, however, was the newest addition to the Pumpkin Patch and had no idea how to write a review that included not only helpful suggestions but highlighting some of the good points, too. Instead, this pumpkin dove head first into critizing the hard work of others. Soon the pumpkins avoided him, but he continued to be harsh in his reviews.

The pumpkin had no idea he might be crushing another's hopes and dreams of becoming a writer someday. The more seasoned pumpkins tried to explain to him that perhaps he should study the Public Review Page before reviewing any further. But it was too late by then. The pumpkin had fallen into a pattern he felt confident with and refused to change his habits. And so from then on, he was referred to as 'The Punkin' Head.'

I suppose you're expecting a moral to this story??? *Laugh* Well, of course!

*Leaf1* Pumpkins not only need rain to grow, but sunshine, too. *Leaf1*

Don't be a 'Punkin' Head'!

What makes a "Good" Parent?  [E]
Letters4Melissa; What makes a "Good" Parent?
by sweetmaggie

Excerpt: We all make mistakes. We all make bad decisions. There are times that we want to be selfish and put ourselves before our children. The sign of a good parent is one that chooses to make their decisions with their children involved. I can tell you that when in doubt, ask. There are many avenues available to help parents with questions.

*Leaf4*
 Passing of Time  [E]
entering life's winter....
by Eiji

Excerpt:
He stares out unto the white capped seas,
trying to grasp his fleeting thoughts.
Lantana sculptured by incessant winds,
surround him amongst mossy rocks.

Excerpt: Years have passed since I first accepted the assignment of Jonathan the Shoemaker. As with all elves of my kind, we receive human assignments to secretly aid them in their troubled times. Yet, this assignment would conclude quite differently than any other ever given to us. It is a tale of dreams coming true, and passions being fueled. I remember it as if it was merely yesterday…

 The Curse of Curves  [18+]
Girl who has everything doesn't realize it. First scene in a six scene, short play.
by Althea Bennett

Excerpt:
JUSTIN:
This is what I don’t understand about women. You want men to tell you you’re beautiful, but when we do, you come back at us like we’re trying to get something out of you. Then, when we tell you to go off to work, you act like we are saying we don’t want you around you anymore. We take that back and now we’re trying to rip your independence away from you. I don’t know what women want from us.

*Leaf4*
 Not Too Late  [E]
Working with teens in Juvenile Justice System. Significant Revision on October 18, 2007.
by SWPoet

Excerpt:
In silence, your wounds fester
Fear turns to anger
Frustration to aggression
Best intentions go awry
Your theme, Misunderstanding

*Leaf4*
 Poor Iris  [13+]
In desperation, Iris makes a choice she would not otherwise make. Short story, ~400 words.
by Under the Bed

Excerpt: With alcohol circling your bloodstream, it’s easier to do things you know you’ll regret. With bills to pay, without a job, with worry on your mind, it’s easier to do things you know you’ll regret.

*Leaf4*
Yesterday  [E]
Leaving yesterday with the sunset
by Shh...whisper, MHWAmember

Excerpt:
Purple hues across the skyline
bring closure to this untamed day

*Leaf4*
 Maybe  [E]
Just a poem about love lost...
by Hayden

Excerpt:
It's not that I didn't want to give you everything.
I just couldn't watch you take all of me.
Maybe in another life we could be so much more,
but it's this life I watched you throw away.

*Leaf4*
 Deception  [13+]
It's about a girl who fell in love, and got it violently thrown back in her face...
by Kait

The smile on her face,
is a mask hiding the pain
of the bleeding, broken heart.

*Leaf4*
 Relief  [E]
Epiphany and freedom of an abuse survivor (any age or gender): a very short poem
by SWPoet

I drop a glass
It breaks, I freeze
No one comes

Excerpt: It was the summer I turned thirteen. Jack Sutton and I had spent the entire summer together, hiking in the woods or camping out in the backyard or just doing what young bored boys do on long hazy summer days. We grew up in a small Pennsylvania town nestled beside a slow rolling river. The town was surrounded by mountains and most of the residents worked in the mine on the outskirts of town.

Excerpt: I was new in school, transferred. The suffocating pressure of the shift in our overarching culture was reaching its fingers into the student body. A casual observer would think me on this wave, with my unkempt clothes and long hair. This was the year of transition. I’d been attacked and taunted by the general population for my long hair; some of the teachers took their shots, too.

*Note* Last month's question:

Are there any specific topics you would like to see covered in a future Noticing Newbies Newsletter?

*Leaf2* K. Deagle
This issue of "Noticing Newbies" (Lighting a campfire) was definitely well worth the time to write as it would provide newbies like me, for example, an overview of what it takes to choose appropriate settings for their pieces.

Thank you so much. *Smile* It means a lot to me to know my efforts are appreciated!

You've pulled together a great newsletter. Though I've been here for a while, I still found helpful articles.

I also enjoyed your selection of new reads.
