Want to Know How To Rate?
 Question: As we all know, reviewing is a huge part of the writing.com community, and It can be as daunting as it is enjoyable.The "rating" seems to be an ongoing issue. What exactly is the protocol. And how do we remain fair and encouraging if we rate a story 2.5 as opposed to 4.5 And if you liked it enough to give it a 4.5 then why not just a 5? The rating system is a bit controversial, and it strikes an emotional chord.
There is a lot of confusing talk about reviewing and rating but the official information isn't easy to find when you need it. I thought I'd highlight some of it here for easy reference and hope everyone takes the time to read it again if it's been awhile.

How Should I Rate Items on Writing.Com?
Writing.Com is a reading and writing community where writers come to receive honest feedback from their peers. Ratings handed out here should be constructive and not just a pat on the back.
If you want to send encouragement, give out a few Gift Points.
Reserve your ratings for the sincere evaluation of items.

Comment-In-A-Box
I have finally put words to the Writing.Com rating system. I am going to start accompanying my rating numbers with a link to this item. That way, authors not only have a rating, but a general guideline to look at, as well. Call it my "Comment-In-A-Box" for items I don't feel like reviewing in detail.

The Rating / Reviewing Preference
All Authors on Writing.Com are here for different reasons. Some of you are here to perfect the craft of writing, asking for honest, useful feedback for your items. Some of you write for pure pleasure and want to share your work with the community, but not receive suggestions for improvement.
Authors have the option to set the Rating/Review Preference on their items as "Unrestricted", "Rating Requires a Review" or "Comments Only; No Ratings". The first two options make your item a Rateable item while the third makes your item Unrateable.

The purpose of the Review Request Page is to match those Writing.Com authors who are looking for serious critiques with those Writing.Com members looking to give them. Items should only be posted here if the author is looking for honest and helpful reviews.
RULES:
Only post an item here if you are looking for an honest review.
Reviews given from this forum can be as in-depth and thorough as the reviewer chooses. It's not the place to go for your first critique or if you're leery of reviewers being 'too tough'. Always read the headers of all forums carefully.

Find A Review Forum!
For those members looking for gentle or specialized reviews, there are many review forums to suit your needs. If you would rather someone read that is experienced in your genre, such as Fantasy or Sci-Fi, they are listed here. Some specialize in poetry, shorts and lengthy novels.. A few are GC specific, while others are GC restricted. Whatever you write you can be sure to find a forum for it.

These guidelines should relieve you of the stress of guessing how you should rate. Following recommended guidelines are usually the best for everyone. It's always up to you though.

Hello all,
I can pick up errors in my work, not just in the 2nd draft, but all the way through to the 10th ! Not because I'm stupid (well maybe), but because I read what I think is on the page as I know the story so well, not what is actually there. Always useful to get someone else to read it, as long as they're not afraid to point out that I've messed up (again).

Don't curb the thoughts, get them written
While with the muse bug you are bitten.
Plenty of time, later on
To come back and change what was wrong!

A interesting letter with extremely helpful advice. Learning to write that first draft without sweating the details is a difficult hurdle to overcome. One that I still battle.
