Surveys

Survey Forms are in-depth questionnaires that allow Upgraded Members to ask up to 50 customized questions, using text boxes, text areas, multiple choice and more. Survey Forms are perfect for doing thorough research for an article or soliciting detailed reviews for a particular item!

A step-by-step guide to creating a Survey

Step 1:

Click on "Writing" at the very top of any WDC page, and then click on "Survey" within the Writing: Interactive Section. (Or you can click on "Create an Item" within the Site Tools selection in the Site Navigation Tool at the left of the screen.)

Step 2:

Choose a topic. Surveys can be used for a number of reasons - from research to membership applications or even just for fun. *Smile*

Step 3:

Enter the title and brief description. Rate it according to its contents, and select genres and keywords (to make the item pop up when members browse genres or search for specific words).

Step 4:

Write your item body, which should include instructions for your readers and perhaps the reason behind your survey. You may want to list specific requirements and rules here if any are applicable.

Step 5:

Single or Multiple Submissions? For certain surveys (contests, membership applications, etc.) a single submission may be necessary, but in cases of surveys for fun or research, perhaps you'll want to permit multiple submissions. It's up to you!

Step 6:

Click on "Save Item."

A few things to keep in mind:

1. 50 questions The limit is 50 for the number of questions allowed in a survey. While you may be tempted to enter 50, keep in mind that you'll want to keep your participant's attention. 50 may be too many. Perhaps you should consider making some of the questions optional.

2. Upgraded memberships An upgraded membership is required to create a survey (but not to fill one out). For information on WDC memberships, see "Compare Free and Paid Membership Benefits

3. Gift Points Surveys allow a gift point donation to be collected. There are three settings - Do not allow gift points, Allow gift points, or Require gift points. The setting is up to you.

*Question*Did you know?*Question*

You can set up an automatic response to a survey! Here you can thank members submitting a survey response or give further instructions if they are helpful. All you need to do is create a static item with your response, then enter its ID number in the edit screen of your survey.

Once your survey is created, add/delete/edit questions using the "Manage Survey" option. Here you will be able to specify the type of question (multiple choice, text box, check box, etc.)

You can view all responses to your survey by clicking "List Responses" from the "Manage" option.

You can also purge all responses there, too. This may be helpful for new rounds of a contest that utilizes the single submission option.
