 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com.
 We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

Imagination: The Greatest Resource of All
We can research endlessly, but in order to write good fiction, our imagination is the greatest resource of all. Without it, writing would be dry and boring. We are not robots, but an extremely imaginative breed.  I have, however, heard a few people say, "I have no imagination." I cannot believe that any human being does not have an imagination. Perhaps some of us are gifted with more than others, but we all do have one. Keep in mind though, if you don't use it, or challenge it, it could get a little rusty. 
A story, as I'm sure you know, begins with a thought or idea. It grows from a tiny seed and sprouts to limitless heights, fertilized by imagination. If you allow yourself to dream, and gather up your ideas, perhaps you can create a world of your own... a story only you can create using your own imagination.
The Tempations released a #1 hit single back in 1971 called Just My Imagination, which included the words:
Just my imagination -- once again --
running away with me.
Tell you it was just my imagination
running away with me.
I never met her, but I can't forget her.
Just my imagination..
-- ooh yeah, yeah, yeah, yeah --
running away with me
Allowing your imagination to run away with you just might lead you to a world where
your future book will take place, unusual characters you may encounter, and adventures you've never experienced.
Keep a record of your ideas. Allow your mind to run away for awhile. Get to know the characters you have imagined, especially the ones who keep popping back into your head, not letting you forget them.
The words below are taken from the lyrics of a song from "Willy Wonka"... Pure Imagination:
If you want to view paradise
Simply look around and view it
Anything you want to, do it
Wanta change the world?
There's nothing
To it
Don't be afraid to create your own world. Your mind has the power to think any way you like. All you need to do is allow your thoughts to soar. You might feel silly about certain ideas, but perhaps those are the ones that need to be written down. Think back on some of the silly characters Dr. Seuss and other authors have created. If they'd been too embarrassed to share with the public their extremely imaginative characters and worlds, we wouldn't know Cat in the Hat or Willy Wonka, among others.  Pure imagination is all you need to begin.

And Now For Our Featured Newbies!
Excerpt: I wiped my boots on the welcome mat and walked into the highly decorated living room. It had so many decorations, it looked like a museum. It smelled a little like lavender, and at the same time, it smelled like a farm. You know, like that smell when you go horseback riding, it smells a little gross, but if you're like me and love riding horses, than you just love that smell.
Excerpt: He was alive, but in intensive care. Lilith's breaths came out shaky as she thought of him lying in a hospital operating table, surrounded by doctors. She couldn't imagine his injuries, she could only picture him sucking in shallow breaths, his black hair mussed and clumpy, his skin pale and sickly, and his dark chocolate eyes shut to the world around him. She merged onto the one lane highway, twisty and flanked by trees. It was a country road, but much faster than the open freeway. It was four in the afternoon, and Lilith wanted to avoid traffic as much as possible.
Excerpt: It was Christmas and we were having company. Uncle Ronnie and Aunt Shirley would be here soon. I could hardly wait, Aunt Shirley always smells so good, I like to lay next to her and let her pet me. Sometimes, if I catch her off guard, I can kiss her and sometimes she lets me. Oh! the doorbell...I know it's our company, I just wonder if I can be the first one to greet them. If I run really fast, I can be there before the Shelties. Oh, I forgot to tell you, I live with my Mom and two beautiful Shelties. My name is Pebbles and I am a Lhasa Apso.
Excerpt: The young woman in the mirror looked, for lack of a better word, beautiful. Just as radiant and gorgeous as every bride looks, or hopes to look, on her wedding day. Except for her eyes, misery-filled eyes that no bride should ever have.
Excerpt: She was an unusual woman, born abnormally large and slightly disfigured, but in no way was she disabled. Her crooked face repelled the people in the village, and so she had mostly kept to herself all her life. There were a few good friends that came to visit, as well as a few strangers who had heard word of her mysterious ways and words, and so traveled many leagues to see her. That evening she sat in her chair of willow branches within her small cozy cottage nestled within the frosted hills of England, staring into the flame of a simple candle, white as the driven snow.

Hi Cubby! Great job on the newsletter. It feels very warm and inviting like an incubator which is good since it is sort of an incubator for Newbies. I remember how intimidating it was trying to navigate this site when I was a newborn.
This newsletter was a much needed security blanket.
I want to submit my input to newbies in a metered piece I wrote a while back for the "don't newbie" contest. Perhaps you could consider putting it under "a few more places to check out." I would be most honored and have the satisfaction of contributing to the newbie communtiy.
