Even if you don't live in the U.S., unless you live under a rock you can't help but know about the historic presidential election that just took place over here. As you read this newsletter, another U.S. presidential campaign (that started over two years ago!) is finally over and we have a new president-elect, Barack Obama, prepared to break most of his campaign promises and disappoint the hell out of me when he takes office in January, 2009. 
Yeah, I'm cynical. Even though the candidate I voted for ended up winning, I doubt it will make that much difference in terms of Washington politics as usual. I suppose my political cynicism stems from the fact that I "came of age" in the 70's, during Viet Nam, Watergate, and Nixon's shameful resignation -- so it's difficult for me to have much faith that even the best, brightest, and shiniest of candidates won't turn out to be just like the rest of them and eventually do something to break my heart.
That said -- on a serious note -- it IS monumental that we elected an African American president 44 years after the Civil Rights Act was passed. It was long past due, and I am proud that this country was able to finally see beyond race to the character of a person. Now if we could only get a woman in the Oval Office! 
But this is supposed to be the Comedy Newsletter, so for those of you still reading  let me change tracks here and say that even though it seemed to drag on painfully forever, the role comedy played in this campaign was the best and the brightest ever, thanks in large part to the Republicans. The central role of comedy in this election started with McCain announcing his run for President on the Letterman show instead of a mainstream press conference. Then there were the usual campaign bloopers along the way, captured on video and posted instantaneously on YouTube. And how about a sitting president whose incredibly low approval rating made him such a pariah that few Republicans sought or wanted an endorsement from him. Check out this very funny sketch from Saturday Night Live from a few weeks ago that was actually not that far from the truth as an example"

We all knew that McCain's advanced age would be the butt of many jokes, but he struck comedy gold by choosing Sarah Palin as his running mate. (THANKS JOHN!) Seriously, she really was the gift that kept on giving, most notably via Tina Fey's brilliant portrayal of Palin for most of the fall episodes, which brought SNL back from the dead. In addition there were SNL appearances by the real deals themselves, with Palin a couple of weeks ago, and most recently with McCain and Fey this past Saturday in a very funny QVC sketch. Kudos to both of them for being such great sports and being so willing to poke fun at themselves!
But here is what concerns me the most. ABC news reports that on Letterman and Leno between Sept. 1 and Oct. 27, there were 279 Palin jokes, 199 McCain jokes, with the Democrats coming in a distant second with 40 Obama jokes and only 29 Biden jokes (which suprises me because Biden is also a great source of comedy fodder). So now that the Obama/Biden ticket won the election, will political comedy potential drop lower than the recent stock market? Well, here is where my cynicism comes in handy (and we come full circle!) because I am sure it won't take long for them to mess things up enough to bring back comedy in full swing. How's that for looking on the bright side?!
As I close let me say a special thank you to all of the comedians out there who have made this campaign season bearable. Special thanks to Jon Stewart of the Daily Show and the cast of SNL (who I am sure all read this newsletter)! Without all of you I wouldn't have made it through Election 2008 alive -- but thanks to you, as always, laughter won the day.
Oh, and congrats to President-Elect Obama! Now bring us some funny! And until you do, I guess I'll get my comedy fix by watching Elizabeth Hasselbeck implode on the View. Wheeeeeeee!

Great newsletter. I totally relate to meeting under strange circumstances, not wanting commitment, and never leaving again. My hubby and I met through friends, didn't want anything serious and moved in a month later. Married four years after that, and celebrated our 13 on the 30th of Sept.
It does happen like that often, doesn't it! Congrats on it working for you as well!
