Real life should always be your inspiration for a great piece of fiction, what's more fantastic than a 'real-life' love story? You have to remember most things that happen to us or those we know, are more unbelievable than those we could image. The trick is to turn those bizarre anecdotes into something credible. How can you do that you ask?
First you need to have a good hold on what type of romance you'd like to create. Once you've decided on the sub-genre, (ie intrigue, break-up, death, or simply boy meets girl), determine your comfort level on how much passion you want in the mix.
Make sure your characters are strong with personality before beginning the tale, be it they will be a hero/heroine or the evil one trying to bust up the scene. To keep my personalities in check ( no wise cracks, please) I create a profile with names, places from which they sprang, the reason for being, and so on. These little cheat sheet comes in handy when the writers block rears its ugly head.
Making a situation believable can prove to be difficult, but it can be done. For instance, my mom once told me her dad ran off her husband with a shot-gun...there was no reason for it, they were married, she was still not with child, and yet due to a simple first-time fight that hurt her heart, her father was ready to protect. Simple enough to believe, but to what extent would a parent bring weaponry to defend the heart? In this case, I truly don't remember what the argument entailed but I can let my imagination run wild: another woman, wouldn't let his wife work – due to the time era, suddenly has a child he didn't know about...on and on it could spin into a believable tale.
I hope you enjoy these items I've chosen. They vary from sweet and happily ever after to heartbreak...which is after all how love is in the real world.
