I had planned to do this edition on reviewing fantasy and science fiction, but after considering when this edition was due for release, I changed my mind. Wednesday, April 1, is April Fools’ Day or All Fools Day depending upon ones point of view. The origin of April’s Fools Day is unclear; however, it may have something to do with the move to the Gregorian calendar in 1582.

Before the inception of the Gregorian calendar, most people celebrated New Year’s Day about April 1 close to the vernal equinox. After the Pope Gregory XIII’s calendar came into use, New Year’s Day became January 1. Some people continued to celebrate April 1 as New Year’s Day, either because they did not accept the new calendar or did not know the new date for New Year’s Day. Those who celebrated New Year’s Day on January 1 made fun of those who celebrated the New Year on April 1 and sent them on “fool’s errands”.

April Fools’ could just as easily trace its origins to court jesters who informed Emperor Constantine, they could rule the empire better then he could. Because of the jesters bragging, Constantine gave one of them power to rule for a day. The jester’s name was Kugel and he proclaimed that day a day of absurdity, which became an annual custom.

Whatever the explanation of April Fools’ Day it is an ancient tradition that crosses many cultural and national boundaries. It is a day of fun, practical jokes and “fools errands”. So in celebration of All Fools’ Day, I would like to challenge the readers of this newsletter to write a fantasy or science fiction story using an April Fools’ Day theme or telling the story of the day’s origin. Make the story between 200 and 2,000 words, with a rating of 18+ or less. I will publish the best stories in an up coming newsletter. Please include the word count of the story.

There may be another explanation for All Fools’ Day then those mentioned in this newsletter. Have fun and write your own fable, myth, fantasy or science fiction story about April Fools’ Day.
