Hello friends! I'm the guest editor for this newsletter and am happy to be here. I thought I'd write a little bit about finding time for love during the holidays.

It's The Most Wonderful Time of the Year
Have you noticed the holiday commercial season starts earlier and earlier each year? Black Friday used to be the beginning of the shopping season, where stores revealed their beautiful holiday displays and impulse merchandise. (No one buys shower radios the rest of the year.) I noticed this year; the decor was being hung the day after Halloween.
No matter how early you begin your shopping, there is always the last-minute gift to purchase, wrap and store. And in the hustle and bustle of all that goes on, sometimes the heart of the season gets lost. So I thought I'd write a few hints that my family uses to help keep the love in the season.
The first hint is to be organized. The more you can prepare, the less craziness happens. We try to have a place in the house (my office) where the wrapping things can be left and anyone who needs to dash in and wrap can do so. We also try hard to make time for family togetherness. Not easy with teenagers! But we have a tradition of watching Elf! together, and try to schedule shopping as a relaxed event rather than dashing around desperate for meaningless gifts.
I used to give my children Advent calendars. Oh the excitement of opening the little door each day for a chocolate was so exciting. Teenagers, not so much. So now I write Advent sticky notes! Each morning I stick a note on their door, telling them something I love about them, or am proud of what they do. They roll their eyes, but I notice they get out of bed and look for them each morning.
We also make time for one another. Even if it's a breakfast date early Saturday morning, we try to have some quality time together. Our Christmas Eve is pretty chaotic at the house. Santa rides the fire truck all around our town that night and when he needs a break, he stops at our house. (He's a good friend.) So needless to say, the entire neighborhood brings their children over to see him. But once the chaos has quieted and the kids have gone to bed, the spouse and I exchange a special gift. It's not always an expensive gift and sometimes it's a little naughty, but we take the time to do something special.
The best way to bring a little romance or love to the season is to give a little bit of yourself. A little time and effort can go a long way. And in the long run, it's a lot more rewarding than anything you can buy. Have a happy holiday season!
