My name is Crys-not really here . I'm excited to be guest editing the Noticing Newbies Newsletter this week!

All portfolio items on Writing.com have two ratings: an intro rating and a content rating. Rating your items appropriately is important because it allows each member to set their own comfort level for what they read on the site. For example, some people may not want to read stories rated GC or XGC. Others may feel uncomfortable with stories rated 18+. The beauty of Writing.com is that all writing is welcome so long as it’s properly rated!

So why two ratings? An Intro Rating applies to the Title and Brief Description only. This information is shown around the site in areas like public listings, so it’s important that it’s correct. When you do a search on Writing.com, the Title and Brief Description of your results pops up. Titles with Non-E rated intro are only displayed to members who have their rating preferences set to include GC and above.

A Content Rating applies to the entire content of your item. Think of it as the Writing.com equivalent of the MPAA Movie Rating System.

E : Everyone
ASR : Adult Supervision Recommended
13+ : Recommended for Readers 13 Years and Older Only
18+ : Recommended for Readers 18 Years and Older Only
GC : May Contain Graphic Content
XGC : May Contain Extreme Graphic Content

"Content Rating System (CRS) explains each rating in detail.

*Exclaim* Don’t worry if you get some of your ratings wrong at first. The system can be tough for those not yet familiar with it. Moderators are on the lookout for improperly rated items. From time to time, you may receive an automated e-mail saying that the Intro or Content Rating of one of your items has been changed by a moderator. Don’t freak out! You aren’t in trouble and won’t be kicked off the site because you’ve improperly rated an item.

*SnowMan* Most improper ratings are accidental or due to the fact that the member doesn’t fully understand the content rating system. Moderators are here to help you understand the ratings.

"Content Rating Support is a very useful forum to have saved in your favorites. It can be used for the following things:

*Snow1* To ask questions about the ratings of your items
*Snow1* To ask questions about notices you may have received about rating changes
*Snow1* To report items you see that may be improperly rated

As with anything else, properly rating your items gets easier with practice. Don’t get discouraged; just ask questions!
