 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com.
We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

First Steps
Taking the first step is not easy for everyone, whether it's being new to an online community, changing an unhealthy life style, or getting a manuscript ready for submission.
Let's assume at this point, you have completed a piece and are ready to take the steps toward sending it out to publishing houses. Read through the list of questions below to make sure your manuscript is ready:
 Have I corrected all typos? Is my POV consistent?
Is my text 12 pt and font typed in Courier or other acceptable fonts?
Is the body of my manuscript double spaced?
Have I included page numbers after the first page, along with my last name/title on each page following the first?
Do I have all contact information correctly placed on the first page, along with word count?
Have I read the guidelines from the publisher I am sending my manuscript to?
Do I need to query first or send the complete manuscript?
Have I written a simple cover letter with the correct editor's name included?
If I'm sending the same manuscript to multiple publishers, did I include this information in my cover letters?
Do I included a SASE?
Am I keeping track of my submission mailing dates and responses?
Taking that first step can seem overwhelming with so many things to think about. But once you have done it a few times, it's really not that hard.
I cannot stress enough, though: Do your homework before sending anything to any publishing house. If you don't, you might be wasting valuable time.

Excerpt: Reaching through the dense leaves, he grasped the lemon and twisted it off its stalk. The hefty fruit was as large as Pascual’s hand and he inspected its waxy pores before lifting it to his nose and sniffing. Nodding, he placed it in the rope bag alongside the dusty Muscatel grapes. He knew the boy loved to peel the tough grape skins and suck on the sweet pulp inside.
Excerpt: I knew something was wrong with the way he had said that, so I wrestled out of his grip and sprinted to the house, shoving through the groups of people I didn't know. I arrived in the bedroom, only to see orange flames licking at the windows, and was confounded that my parents were still asleep, not even aware of the smoke curling above them and chaos around them.
Excerpt: Just a pair of jeans and a few practical shirts. Maybe a new sweater. The shy girl’s shopping goals were not ambitious. She was friendless and dateless and had no use for pretty clothes. A plain and conservative wardrobe was all she needed to stand quietly in corners and visit the bookstore alone.
Excerpt: I have no recollection of anything before the age of four. It's a curious feeling that I get when I look at pictures of a slight little girl of 2 1/2 or 3, blond wispy hair and big round blue eyes that are supposed to be me at that age, but they generate no emotion in seeing them. It is as if I were looking at someone else's child born in 1952.
Excerpt: I thought it would just go away after a while but people still remember and call me the hero. Some of the guys at work say it derisively just to yank my chain and I don’t mind that so much. I usually just strike a couple of weight-lifter poses for them then flip them the bird. It’s the people who say it with real admiration who bother me. I never set out to fool anyone any more than I set out to save that girl that day. Lisa, her name is Lisa. I have come clean with her about how I feel about it and she tells me that I am still her hero. I’ll tell you the story and you can decide for yourself if I am a hero or not.
Excerpt: Some will hear my words as nonsense and fantasy. I do not write for these. Rather, I write for those who are now awakening even as I have. For I have been sleeping a very deep sleep —moving from one life to another without knowing myself. Was it a curse that left me so? I suppose it was. But it was a curse I put upon myself through foolish pride. You will come to see that in due time.

I checked out the links for the Children's Poem/Story Contest and the Weekly Newbie Challenge, but both are so old, nothing is happening. How do I find groups that are still active for children's writing, in particular?
~ Keep trying. Sometimes contests or other forums are closed, due to lack of interest. There are many out there, however, going strong. I have no doubt you've already discovered a few since your feedback.

Good Inspiration! My best writing comes when I'm the most tired and I want to go to sleep--but if I don't write it down, I lose it! Ugh!
