 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com.
 We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

This & That for Newbies
Entering the world of Writing.Com can be a bit overwhelming at first. Until, that is, you begin meeting friendly members who are happy to help out and answer questions. 
One of the first questions newbies tend to ask is, "How do I post something?" Click on the item below and you will find easy details!
Another popular question is, "How can I get a review/critique?" A great place to start is:

 Click on Writing.Com Tools on the left side of the screen and scroll down to WritingML Help. It's a great place to learn how you can show expression and emotion and add color and style to your text.

Excerpt: I was wrong. I ran into a dead end with that person coming ever so close. I stopped and turned to see if there was any escape. There wasn't. I dropped into a ball and started crying when I saw a pair of feet stop in front of me. I looked up and let out an ear piercing scream, hoping anyone could hear me. The next thing I know I was laying face first in the ground feeling something warm oozing down the side of my face. Then I blacked out.
Excerpt: Despite the dark, the silence and the cold Faldir was not afraid. He had always loved the dark places, even places like this one. It was his place of safety and security. Abandoned as a child in the street of a nameless city in the hot southlands he had hidden in the shadows and other dark places to keep cool and safe during the day. At night he came out and stole what he needed to survive.
Excerpt: Peter pushed a C.D into the C.D player and the speakers started blaring "NAHHHHHHH NAHHHH NAHHH NAH NAH NAH NAHHHH, NAHH NAH NAH NAHHH HEY JUDE." I smiled at him and started singing along. Peter was the only one in the world who knew that that song would cheer me up. As we were singing there was a strange noise coming from the engine.
Excerpt: A wash of loose pages, pulped newspapers, and several stray periodicals littered the steps of the Cordelia East branch library. Newly constructed 8 years before, the library was one of the most cherished buildings in town and one of Gina's favorite haunts. Was.
Excerpt: "Three-Two-One- FIRE!" Tara exclaimed as Jallin's arrow went whizzing thought the air, and towards the large circular target.
"I did it! Did you see that Tawa I-" The four year old stopped short, because as soon as the arrow soared out of his grasp, it burst into a brilliant blue flame. It whistled through the air like a meteor, leaving a trail of smoke in it's wake.
Excerpt: "Why did I end up with the only honest manager in show business? Look, they don't get hurt. They slowly forget about me and go on with their lives. I give them some good memories to look back on, and a few extra trinkets to remember me by. Everyone wins. Besides, I'm not asking for them to be delivered to my bedroom. I'm only asking you for a name and number of two. It's ultimately their decision. I've never forced any of them, and I've never known one who regretted it the next morning."

Excerpt: Not far from home a dry creek bed washed to bedrock and terraced by crumbly earth offered a place for my children to play. Some days it became a fairyland of butterflies and toadstools, where after a gentle rain, elves peered from caves carved by time and ships of green leaves rode calm waters in hollowed stone.
Excerpt: Mr. Napplebee had never had a goldfish before, but the pet store employee had explained to him how to care for Geoffrey. Mr. Napplebee fed Geoffrey just as he was instructed, cleaned his water regularly, and made sure Geoffrey had all the latest fashionable goldfish accessories, but still something seemed odd.
Excerpt: Everyone in the Great Green Pond was proud to say that they knew Sir Phillip Croakington. The blue herons knew him for his deep, rolling voice, which thrummed across the meadow whenever the moon came out. The goldfish knew him for his magnificent backstroke, and for the great silver ripples that he made with each kick of his stubby legs. The dragonflies knew him for his lumpy brown skin, which they thought looked just like the pebbly bank of the pond. And the bluebottle flies knew him for...well, no one is quite sure what they thought of him.

Great newsletter, Cubby. These are words that are not for Newbies alone. Thanks for the reminder. Of course I've heard it before, but something about this time hit home.

Create a first paragraph that will hook your readers right away!
I've been working on this story for a long time, but have only been with WDC for 6 months. Here's the first paragraph -
"The Volkswagen engine wobbled above Bob, when he heard the news on the radio."

~ Aha! Very good! Right away, I'm wondering What news? And why is Bob under the VW engine?, in other words, you've pulled me in with intrigue. Then I read your story you posted above and was pulled back into a time when I was younger (I had a blue VW Bug, too!). And when I got towards the end, I thought, Oh! Yeah, I remember that! I loved how you wrapped this up without having to spell things out to the reader. Or at least a reader who remembers that era! Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed it.
