Quote
"It is necessary to write, if the days are not to slip emptily by. How else, indeed, to clap the net over the butterfly of the moment? For the moment passes, it is forgotten; the mood is gone; life itself is gone. That is where the writer scores over his fellows: he catches the changes of his mind on the hop."
~Vita Sackville-West

This & That for Newbies

Entering the world of Writing.Com can be a bit overwhelming at first. Until, that is, you begin meeting friendly members who are happy to help out and answer questions. *Smile*

One of the first questions newbies tend to ask is, "How do I post something?" Click on the item below and you will find easy details!

 Creating New Items  (E)
Explains various methods to create items.
#169002 by The StoryMistress

Another popular question is, "How can I get a review/critique?" A great place to start is:

The Shameless "Plug" Page  (E)
This is the one and only Writing.Com Shameless Plug Page!
#155333 by Writing.Com Support

And another: "How do I change the font color, or make letters bold or use emoticons or...?" *Shock* *Delight* *Bigsmile* *Heart*

*Note4* Click on Writing.Com Tools on the left side of the screen and scroll down to WritingML Help. It's a great place to learn how you can show expression and emotion and add color and style to your text.

Now my question is:

What would you like to read about in future Noticing Newbies newsletters?
                   How to do a review?
                   How to organize your portfolio?
                   Tips on writing?
Let us know whatever it is you'd like to learn more about!

If you are interested in specific genres, such as Poetry, Action/Adventure, Spiritual, Mystery, Short Stories, etc., you can sign up for any or all of the genre-related newsletters here--all free! Click on My Account and scroll down until you see Manage Newsletter Subscriptions. Check whichever genre you are interested in and it will arrive in your email once a week, usually Wednesdays or Thursdays. We aim to please!*Smile*

What do you like best about WDC?
Any complaints so far? (please be nice though!)
We love positive feedback and encouraging comments. *Smile*
         Please let us know!

         We care. *Heart*

Have a wonderful week!!!

Keep on Writing!

Yours truly,

The Curious Case of Love  [13+]
Rich snob living the life in Malibu gets sent to a Cincinnati boarding school
by mysteriousmystifyer

Excerpt: I was wrong. I ran into a dead end with that person coming ever so close. I stopped and turned to see if there was any escape. There wasn't. I dropped into a ball and started crying when I saw a pair of feet stop in front of me. I looked up and let out an ear piercing scream, hoping anyone could hear me. The next thing I know I was laying face first in the ground feeling something warm oozing down the side of my face. Then I blacked out.

 Splintered - Prolouge  [13+]
The Opening chapter of a much wider sotry
by Ath-x64

Excerpt: Despite the dark, the silence and the cold Faldir was not afraid. He had always loved the dark places, even places like this one. It was his place of safety and security. Abandoned as a child in the street of a nameless city in the hot southlands he had hidden in the shadows and other dark places to keep cool and safe during the day. At night he came out and stole what he needed to survive.

Excerpt: Peter pushed a C.D into the C.D player and the speakers started blaring "NAHHHHHHH NAHHHH NAHHH NAH NAH NAH NAHHHH, NAHH NAH NAH NAHHH HEY JUDE." I smiled at him and started singing along. Peter was the only one in the world who knew that that song would cheer me up. As we were singing there was a strange noise coming from the engine.

by Kat

Excerpt: "Three-Two-One- FIRE!" Tara exclaimed as Jallin's arrow went whizzing thought the air, and towards the large circular target.
"I did it! Did you see that Tawa I-" The four year old stopped short, because as soon as the arrow soared out of his grasp, it burst into a brilliant blue flame. It whistled through the air like a meteor, leaving a trail of smoke in it's wake.

Love is Hard! Chapter 1  [18+]
Chapter one of Love is Hard! romance novel
by Bethia Mae MacAllister

Excerpt: "Why did I end up with the only honest manager in show business? Look, they don't get hurt. They slowly forget about me and go on with their lives. I give them some good memories to look back on, and a few extra trinkets to remember me by. Everyone wins. Besides, I'm not asking for them to be delivered to my bedroom. I'm only asking you for a name and number of two. It's ultimately their decision. I've never forced any of them, and I've never known one who regretted it the next morning."

 Enchantment  [E]
A mother remembers when her children were very young and lived with imagination and spirit
by Anon

Excerpt: Not far from home a dry creek bed washed to bedrock and terraced by crumbly earth offered a place for my children to play. by A Guest Visitor

Excerpt: Mr. Napplebee had never had a goldfish before, but the pet store employee had explained to him how to care for Geoffrey.  Amazing Adventures of Sir Croakington  [E]
Ever wonder what happens when a southern toad gets kidnapped and taken to the arctic?
by Wordsmith

Excerpt: Everyone in the Great Green Pond was proud to say that they knew Sir Phillip Croakington. The blue herons knew him for his deep, rolling voice, which thrummed across the meadow whenever the moon came out. The goldfish knew him for his magnificent backstroke, and for the great silver ripples that he made with each kick of his stubby legs. The dragonflies knew him for his lumpy brown skin, which they thought looked just like the pebbly bank of the pond. And the bluebottle flies knew him for...well, no one is quite sure what they thought of him.

*Note1* JACE
Great newsletter, Cubby. These are words that are not for Newbies alone. Thanks for the reminder. Of course I've heard it before, but something about this time hit home.

Uh, I need to go check on a few stories. *Smile*

~ *Bigsmile* Thank you! Reading the first paragraph(s) of novels can be very inspiring to any writer. I'm glad it hit home for you!

Cubby's Writer's Block Challenge of the Month -
Create a first paragraph that will hook your readers right away!

I've been working on this story for a long time, but have only been with WDC for 6 months. Here's the first paragraph -

"The Volkswagen engine wobbled above Bob, when he heard the news on the radio."

~ Aha! Very good! Right away, I'm wondering What news? And why is Bob under the VW engine?, in other words, you've pulled me in with intrigue. *Bigsmile* Then I read your story you posted above and was pulled back into a time when I was younger (I had a blue VW Bug, too!). And when I got towards the end, I thought, Oh! Yeah, I remember that! I loved how you wrapped this up without having to spell things out to the reader. Or at least a reader who remembers that era! Thank you for sharing! I enjoyed it.
