Quotes

"Security is mostly a superstition. It does not exist in nature, nor do the children of men as a whole experience it. Avoiding danger is no safer in the long run than outright exposure. Life is either a daring adventure, or nothing."
~ Helen Keller

"But I work harder now because I have so much more exposure. And actually the harder you work as a writer, the better you get at it. It's like anything else. It's a muscle you have to exercise. I write more now than ever."
~ Ron White

Over-exposure?

Winter for many of us, promises snow and freezing temperatures. Coats, hats, mittens, scarves, and boots protect us from harmful exposure to our bodies.

As a writer, however, we need not protect ourselves from exposure. In fact, exposing ourselves might turn out to be a huge plus. Exposure should be thought of as promoting.

Ways to Expose Yourself as a Writer

*Bullet* Start a blog. (You can do this here at Writing.Com!)

*Bullet* Attend writing conferences. You'll not only meet other aspiring writers, but published authors, and perhaps an agent, or editor.

*Bullet* Write for free. Volunteer to write articles and/or book reviews for a library newsletter. Send a piece to your local newspaper. A byline helps get your name noticed. Bylines promise exposure!

*Bullet* If you have a self-published book, promote it online, at your local library, or anywhere else that wouldn't mind displaying your work. You can also advertise with posters tacked on community boards.

*Bullet* If you are published, call or visit bookstores to ask if you can do a book signing.

*Bullet* Volunteer your time to speak in classrooms, offering writing tips to children.

*Bullet* Send out your manuscripts! Expose yourself to editors.

*Bullet* Join a writing group and be open to feedback. Exposing your stories to other writers who will be honest and encouraging, could be an invaluable learning experience.

*Bullet* Have business cards printed off. They come in handy at writing conferences and save writing down contact information.

*Bullet* Ask a local coffee house if you could organize a reading of your work.

*Bullet* Find an agent, if you can.

But most of all...

*Right* Never Give Up and Keep on Writing!

Have a wonderful week!!!

Yours truly,
Cubby ")

 The Lake's Epiphany  [E]
Are sprites good or bad? Aeryn is going to find out...
by Saireeme

Excerpt: Aeryn stood just beyond the bulrushes, waiting patiently for her sprite friend. Drahmae was wearing her usual purple and green summer dress which accented her porcelain skin quite tastefully. Aeryn was naught but a five-year-old child dressed in well-used play clothes. Drahmae carefully landed upon Aeryn's upheld hand. “What are we going to play today?” asked Aeryn with sparkling eyes. Every since Aeryn's second birthday, the sprite had become her constant companion. No more than three inches tall, it was easy for her to remain hidden.

 Whispered and Taken.  []
If the tree had a child.
by Sammie Mae

Excerpt: Her blue swollen lips began to pulse as the cold around her began to pierce her skin once more. Drawing in a new painful breath, her ears throbbed with the sound of the water rushing around her. She could feel the dress she wore clinging to her weakened body as she lay in the lake. A flash of the forest echoed in her mind startling her; her big brown eyes shooting open.

by A Guest Visitor

Excerpt: Billy jumped up out of his chair when he heard a distorted scream. “Who- who’s there?” He looked around the cabin nervously. And walked to the windows. He stared into an abyss of darkness. Nothing could be seen for miles. “It’s okay. There’s no one out there. You’re just… you’re just imagining things. There’s no reason to be scared. Papa will be home any time now.”

Excerpt:
“Mermaid, tears? They look to be
like plain old glass smoothed out by sea.”

 Sonnet 1  [E]
My first Sonnet, about a dead man's legacy.
by F. Pierce

Excerpt:
My requiem foregoes this noble jaunt;
An elegant self-portrait clearly rings.
My light, now out forever, not to haunt
my legacy of hammers upon strings

 Open ears  [E]
a poem about listening
by Missy

Excerpt:
When my ear began to twitch,

And my mouth began to close,

How the earth became unstitched,

And reached up on its toes.
