Contests Make You a Better Writer

I don't know about you, but when I found WdC, I was looking for a place that would help me to become a better writer. I wanted to learn how to write English (better) so that I could polish my novels and submit them for publication. Just in case you're wondering, no, I'm not (yet) a published author.

A couple of obvious ways to enhance your writing is to read and write. As the writer, however, you know exactly what it is you are trying to say. Only the unbiased opinion of somebody else can really show you where your strengths and weaknesses are. This is where writing for contests comes into play.

Writing contests that are run by WdC come with a minimum of two to three reviews. Those reviews will be constructive. That means, you can expect to be told what worked and what didn't work. In member-run contests, there is sometimes only one judge, but most contest hosts have a genuine interest in the genre or subject their contest is in, so they want to read your take on it, and they want to comment on it too. Some contest forums are quite active with contestants sending each other reviews.

With each contest that you enter into, you have a chance to learn more about your style. You gain the insight into your writing that can only come through the eyes of somebody else.
