Love in the Wild
I went camping this weekend. Those who know me well know this is a rare thing for me. I have gone camping exactly four times in my life, but I'm no wimp when it comes to being outdoors. I'm not afraid to get dirty, sleep with bugs in my cabin, or eat stuff that's been cooked over a fire within inches of the ground. I guess I get that from my dad, who would set up a big tent in our back yard every summer and make my mom and I sleep in it in lieu of going camping for real because "you wouldn't be interested in it."
I'm also a sucker for outdoorsman kind of guys. I once went camping with a group of people that included a guy who single-handedly removed wasps nests from a dozen cabins so that we could all sleep sting-free. There's just something about someone who isn't afraid to live out of a backpack and brush his teeth outdoors that is so sexy. As long as I can at least take a hot shower, the man in my life can live in the woods, for all I care.
A guy who enjoys the outdoors can also introduce you to all kinds of experiences you may not have otherwise tried. If you're a city girl who isn't afraid of getting dirty, what can be more romantic than sleeping under the stars with the one you love? How about taking a canoe out on a lake? Maybe it's just me, because I never did those things as a kid, but doing something a little offbeat like that can be fun and endearing.
I'll only talk for a minute about the kind of rugged good looks that I find attractive. Scruffy beards, long hair. Think Sully from Dr. Quinn, Medicine Woman. Now there was the complete package. If I were to write a romance novel I would probably make my male lead a guy with a scruffy beard who lived in a one room cabin in the middle of nowhere. He would have a pet wasp but not tell the young woman who stumbles upon his cabin while on a hike. He shows her how to survive in the wilderness and they fall in love under the night time sky, having their first kiss on the muddy creek bed... or something like that.

Thanks to everyone who wrote in about my last newsletter, Long Engagements. Several of you pointed out that it's impossible to fully know yourself. While I agree that we all are constantly changing and evolving, I do whole-heartedly think that making your own needs a priority is the best way of ensuring that the the people you let into your life are meant to be there.
Thank you for featuring my story in your newsletter. Marriage and engagement are complicated topics, but not enough people think it all through. At 28 I think you're quite right to be enjoying life and pursuing dreams. Too many commit too early and frequently things don't work out. Enjoy your freedom I say. -Scarlett
Hi Crys,
when reading your newsletter I was wondering - do we ever get to know ourselves fully? Even if we do, I personally don't see that as a premise for getting married. I got engaged at the age of 22, after 5 years with my sweetheart, and married him 15 months later. That was three years ago, I'm 26 now, we even have a child, but I still don't think I really know myself. My marriage works, though, so personally I'm glad that I didn't wait until I've figured out who I am or want to be 
I'm with you on not being able to imagine getting engaged or even married after just one year, though. -tanya

Someone once said words to the effect that life is what happens while we are planning our life. There are always obstacles in the way, things to get through first, then life can begin.
