Wow! What a turnout we had for the submissions to the Writing.com Anthology  . I was pretty impressed with all of the excellent items which I got to read. I was chosen to read well over three hundred items of varying genres and types. I read everything from short Haiku poetry to stories of great depth and length. One thing I noticed however, was that not everything was 100% ready for submission. A few items slipped through that still needed a great deal of editing. How do I make sure my entry is submission ready?

   Whether your first step was to write, or to pick out a contest to submit to, before writing, making sure your submission follows the guidelines of the contest is very important. If you have something already written you must first go back and make sure it falls within the parameters of the contest. A few questions you may want to ask yourself before submitting:

          ~Must the item be newly written?
          ~Is this written in the proper genre?
          ~Is this rated correctly?
          ~Do I fall within the word count limit and have it listed (or is it needed)?
          ~Have I proofread this for content/spelling/grammar?
          ~Is this my final draft?

You wrote the entry, so you are very familiar with it. You've looked it over, and you think it is fine, but did you miss anything? Did you double check? If you have the time, it is often useful to have a friend read over your entry before submitting. In lieu of this is always the option to have a reviewing group give it a once over, to see if they can spot any inconsistencies or areas that need work. If going this route, be sure to include the contest prompt and guidelines, so that they know what to look for, rather than review based on the item itself. Sometimes an entry viewed by outsiders (someone not involved with the contest) aren't aware of prompts and points that are necessary for the contest entry to win. Thus, when they review, they may suggest omitting something that may be vital to the contest.

Now the deadline is quickly approaching to get your entry submitted. You have read it and you have gotten some feedback from other authors. Now re-read your entry out loud. Does it say everything you want it to? Does it tell the story as you perceive it? If so, you are now ready to submit your entry to the contest. If by some chance you haven't selected a contest yet, you may want to visit Contests   to choose one from there.

johnny1209~It is always good to see navigation tips for newbies. Even 'oldies' like me need them sometimes. My contest has some new features for newbies... they do not have to compete with much more experienced writers for the big bucks. :)
