Formatting Text
One of the most awesome ways to add "white space" and otherwise make our items look great is by formatting the text.

"White Space" refers to portions of a page that have no text or images. Oftentimes, white space is used to increase readability, and make words look more "attractive" on a page.

On a computer, white space can actually be a little harder to accomplish unless one knows quite a bit of code. However, SM has made it very easy to add white space and other formatting to our text on this particular site, making the requirement of knowing code nearly obsolete.

Above the window you type in, there are all sorts of tools - many of which are familiar from word processing programs. The bold type is there, italics, underline, and strike through. You are probably already familiar with the alignment buttons, etc. I'd like to show you my favorites.

Quote - This is my absolute favorite. I like it much better than indent, because all of the text surrounded by the quote is indented, rather than only the line indented. It is awesome for highlighting certain points by making them stand out, and it is great for adding white space around what is being typed. The button for quotes is found between the "pre" button, and the "drop" button.

Font Type - Fonts are always fun. If anyone ever doubts, they should put a group of people in front of a word processor, and ask them to type a paragraph. Every single paragraph will have a different font type, a different color, and a different size. We each pick fonts to suit our own taste.

WdC is no different! We can choose our own font by choosing the fancy "F" button up there above the typing window. A few buttons will pop up below the line of buttons already there that illustrate the available fonts on WdC. Pick what you'd like, and type away. *Smile*

Bolding, Italics, and Underlines - As you can likely tell, I like bolding things within my writing to help certain things stand out. In this case, each different format type I am displaying is easy to find because of the bold lettering. It has many other uses, however. It can be used to accent, it is often used in titles, and some even use it to make the first letter of their paragraphs stand out.

Italics and Underlines can be used in the same way. Accents, emphasis, making words pop off of a page - bold, italics, and underlines are the most used, and most useful, form of text formatting.

Oh yes! And the easiest buttons to find. They're right at the beginning.

Use some formatting this week in your new writing, or spiffy up an old item. Have a wonderful week, and keep writing!

Ask & Answer

What is YOUR favorite text formatting tool? I know text formatting might be a silly sort of thing, but I admit to enjoying it quite a bit. (Yes, yes. I am a little odd.)
