Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

So it's a new year.
Actually, it's just a new month. Or a new day. Whatever your perspective--it's nothing more than what you really think.
I heard recently that 88% of new year's resolution fail. Maybe that's just some number pulled out of thin air. Perhaps it's an indictment of man's general complacency today. Only you can answer what drives you, what motivates you to write, what pushes your buttons to improve your craft. Only you can resolve AND commit to starting, stopping or changing some specific behavior.
And you don't need no calendar to make it so!
In this month when we traditionally resolve to better ourselves, take a little time to look back at what you've accomplished. You might be surprised at all your accomplishments. I believe things are better than they seem. Look ahead at where you'd like to be in a month ... six months ... a year.
Then, just do it! You don't need January first, or any other artificial help. Make your goals smaller. Take little steps and build your confidence as each small goal is achieved. Lofty goals may sound great. But, they're harder to achieve and usually wind up crumpled in the wastebasket.
Finally, if you find you need help, seek out a mentor, a writing partner, or a good friend who will help keep you on task. Most of us are not self-starters, and a little help from friends may be just the ticket to keep you motivated this year.
Remember, writing is a joy. Take control of your writing and your achievements one small step at a time.

My apologies for missing last month's Noticing Newbies newsletter. I had some issues with the Internet that wouldn't allow me to post my NL in time to be sent out. However, here is some feedback from my previous newsletter, "Own Your Obsessions" .

From A*Monaing*Faith  : I love the interchangability (sp?) of obsession vs. passion; I don't care what dictionary.com says, I think they're synonyms!
ION: I'd love to see an example of this obsession matrix you speak so fondly of. I believe I've heard the term used before in my grade school years (not just in math class either).
Hmmm, I'll have to see if I can set up my matrix as an item. Tables can be a mite involved onsite currently.
From Titch  I am an in and out newbie. I falter then plunge in with gusto then hop off as I get distracted. So a little at a time is the best way for me. Good advice about selecting one area of writing at a time.
At least you keep coming back. Hopefully, this year will be both rewarding and fulfilling as a writer.
From readsalot: Obsessions overcome us. As you said "they drive us forward." I started to wonder, a while back, what got me started on writing. I realized it was not only the passion as you mentioned but the dying need to write. Obession, I agree with you. Your words are powerful in this newsletter. Thanks for sharing.
