About This Newsletter

This week's Comedy Editor:

Writing Comedy can be a challenge. This newsletter will focus on how three authors made it big by infusing humor into their writing and making it big! Hopefully, you will be inspired by how they used humor and maybe try it yourself. I think I might give it a shot!

Writing Comedy Can Make You Millions!

"In retrospect, it was only a matter of time before the Family Dinner passed into history and fast foods took over. I knew its days were numbered the day our youngest propped my mouth open with a fork and yelled into it, "I want a cheeseburger and two fries and get it right this time." I just didn't serve meals with show business pizzazz."~Erma Bombeck. Quote from her Book: Family: The Ties that Bind--and Gag!

The above quote was written by humorist Erma Bombeck. She wrote about family life and published many books during her lifetime. The titles alone will make you laugh. Here are three to check out:

The Grass is Always Greener Over the Septic Tank

If Life is a Bowl of Cherries, What Am I Doing in the Pits?

When You Look Like Your Passport Photo, It's Time to Go Home

Erma started writing as a journalist and wrote over 4,000 humorous newspaper columns chronicling the ordinary life of a housewife. By 1985, 900 newspapers in the U.S. and Canada published her columns and they were anthologized into a series of best-selling books. During the 80’s her earnings were 500k to 1 million! Considering she wrote about the antics of her mother, kids, and husband she became a popular author during her brief lifetime.

Erma Bombeck Bio

Another pair of authors that made it big are Janet and Greta Podleski. These two sisters risked almost everything to be published. Twelve publishers turned them down until David Chilton, author of ‘The Wealthy Barber’ believed in their writing project. Their passion was to create a healthy recipe book—but they took it one-step further and used humor to wake up North America to their eating habits. Here again, like Erma, they used funny titles for their books. Check them out:

Looneyspoons

Crazy Plates

Eat, Shrink, & Be Merry!

All the recipes have hilarious twists to the titles and funny descriptions. Here are few examples to tickle your funny bone and maybe make you hungry!

Bean Me Up, Scotty
Captain’s log: It’s the most enterprising combination of ingredients on the planet. Soup that boldly goes where no soup has gone before.

Rolls Royce
They’re the Cadillac of cinnamon rolls! The Mercedes of bunz! The limousine of baked cuisine! OK, you get the point. These luxurious cinnamon rolls will drive you wild!

Lord of the Wings
They’re the wings that everyone’s Tolkien about! They sure are hobbit-forming. No bones about it!

Recently, they published their fourth book, combining the most popular recipes from the other three books and adding fresh recipes to ‘The Looneyspoons Collection’. So far, it’s sold two million copies! They keep busy with T.V. appearances, their own show, and counting their millions!

Looneyspoon Chicks Info

I’ve been inspired by Erma’s writing for many years. My mother had all of her books and always laughed. She’s told me on several occasions that I remind her of Erma because of all the crazy family stories I relate. When it comes to the ‘Looneyspoon’ chicks, I’ve been using their recipe books since 1996! So, it’s about time I start thinking of my own original take on writing a book by being inspired by these three authors. Maybe I'll call that 'Wealthy Barber' Dude and ask to present a rough outline to pitch my idea to make millions.

First, I need a fresh, original concept:

*Utensils*  A book that relates a family story about baking or cooking and include the recipe.

A snappy, but funny title:

*Utensils*  As the Stomach Turns: Stories and Recipes that will get ya' going from the Kitchen to the Bathroom!

Who will most of the stories be about?

*Utensils*  My mother, because she loves to bake and her cooking is questionable.

Give a brief example of one of the stories involving one of her baking gems:

*Utensils*  Picture a family function. The table is spread with an array of goodies. My mother arrived with a crystal plate full of her newest creation. My jaw dropped and my sister announced how good the treats looked. I replied back and said they looked interesting. The problem was they looked liked something her seven cats left behind in the litter box. Chocolate covered logs with who knows what inside. Later, after my mother's thirty minute explanation, we find out they have peanut butter and that "crunchy rice cereal" inside. They were supposed to be shaped into tiny round balls, but she didn't want to waste her time, so she shaped them into logs. Now with each family function, we ask each other: "Hey, is mom bringing the 'Turds'?"

Based on the above story, what snappy title would you use. Give three examples:

Holy Crapola These Are Tasty

Memories of Kitty Litter Chunks

Turd-O-Licious

I can almost taste the millions!

Then again, I'm no Erma or a Looneyspoon chick. I think it's back to the Comedy writing board for me!

Inspiration can come from all avenues. By reading other humorous authors, you just never know where it can take you and maybe make you a few bucks along the way!

Remember, come on over to the Comedy side—we have cookies. No Turds, just cookies.

Write On and Laugh!

Ask & Answer

I have no feedback, but I'll leave you the link for my mother's famous recipe. I think the original title is way too long. Depending on the shape you choose, one of my titles would be better! *Smirk*

Chocolate Covered Rice Krispies Peanut Butter Balls
