Welcome to this issue of the Noticing Newbies newsletter. Join me as I take you into some nooks and crannies of Writing.Com that you may not have found time to check out yet.
Don't forget to toss me a note about what you liked or didn't like in my column, or about a topic you'd like to see discussed. This newsletter is about and for you. And for you seasoned members, I hope you'll find something you can take from my ramblings.

What's Your Passion?
If you're reading these words, you fall into one of three categories.
 You're a member of Writing.Com. These may be the first days of your journey with us. In that case, I wish you the best in your endeavors.
I took those first steps just over five years ago, one of the better decisions I've made over the years ... and I refer to more than just my penchant for writing. The personal friendships I've made through WDC have enriched my life more than I could have imagined.
Newbie or established member, WDC has the means to meet you at whatever artistic level you are--reader or writer, published author or aspiring to be published, OR just searching for something different.
You may be just visiting Writing.Com to see if it's a good fit for you. You may not be sure what you want. My advice?
Don't let the complexity of WDC scare you away. Spend a few days with us. Take advantage of the free membership--it's truly free. You can cancel at any time. More than 460,000 folks have done just that allowing them to explore the site without spending any money.
Post a small blurb about yourself and your desires in "Noticing Newbies" or "Writing.Com General Discussion" . I'll bet the farm someone will be by to welcome you and strike up a conversation. Writing.Com is a great place to raise your stories and poems while they grow into something of which you can be proud. Remember the saying, "It takes a whole village to raise a child."
Use the Search feature to find some aspect of writing that interests you--something about writing a Young Adult or Christian novel, or a group for Seniors or one for Teens. There are more than 600 groups across WDC. Chances are one exists with your interest in mind. If not, join and start a group of your own. Yes, features that allow hosting a group are reserved for paid membership levels, but it may be worth the small fee for your personal growth.  An annual Basic membership costs less than 5 1/2 cents a day; a Premium membership costs about 38 cents a day.
While you're looking us over, take small bites. Don't try to learn everything at one time. Of course, I was never one to just stick my toe in the water to test the temperature. 
Finally, you may have happened onto this page while surfing the net. A small chance of this occurring, of course, but here you are. Maybe a desire to write has been gnawing at your for some time now. Take this moment to nurture that desire.
To be honest, I found Writing.Com by accident. But I liked what I saw. I was fortunate to have been able to purchase a reduced price Premium membership within a month of joining. With the help of reviews from fellow members, my stories have earned enough gift points through contests to retain that level.
Next issue, I'll explore some groups that you may helpful on your writing journey. Write on! |

I have actually had a WDC membership for years, but have rarely posted, have only one item in my portfolio and have had spotty attendance. However, I have recently re-discovered WDC, as an important resource, now that I have the time to be a much more serious writer.

From Resha : Felt good after reading your article. I do not come often here, but whenever I do come in here, and read a few articles, or write, feel real good. And reading your article, made me feel even better. You are absolutely right in saying, "being a newbie is a state of mind". Definitely!! To sum it up, really encouraged me to visit even more often..hope I can continue actually!!
As they say, "the ball's in your court," my friend. I think you'll find even 15 minutes a day will make a huge difference.

From Kirby Ray : This is the start of a new, big project for me, one I feel rather passionate about, and I would appreciate any exposure I can get. I hope to make this into a bigger story, and if I could get help from the people of this site, that would be fantastic.
Isn't that first step the hardest? Best of luck to you. Consider finding a group with similar interests, or plugging those stories on "The Shameless "Plug" Page" .

From harperpaul: Those who admit to the newness of particular segments of their writing endeavors have an advantage because they admit to the pieces of the puzzle that they don't have together.
An interesting observation. I know I'd rather be a person who knows when he doesn't know something ... 'cause then I go out and find out what I don't know.
