Letter from the editor

Presentation is Paramount

I received an email recently from one of our members who joined WDC almost eleven years ago. storyteller [retired] had written an article about the importance of a story's title and item description for presenting that story to readers, and asked it I would share his thoughts with you. Please take a moment to read his offering, and perhaps post your comments in a review to him.

The old adage you only get one chance to make a first impression is true.

Most places on WDC, static items are listed with one's title and item description.

"The Shameless "Plug" Page E: This is the one and only Writing.Com Shameless Plug Page!

These are just a few of the places on WDC that list stories and poems by titles and item descriptions. The Static Items page alone lists more than 300,000 items.

Several item tags show those all important bits of information, including the most often used link--the Big item, or {bitem:xxxxxxx} tag. When the x's are replaced with your item's seven digit ID number, it will display as

.

The sheer number of items vying for readers' attention here really hinders your ability to get your story read. You must depend on the impression your story makes, and that title/item description combination is often the only chance you'll get.

How do you know if you're headed in the right direction? Read through some of the listings I posted above. How many of them caught your attention enough to make you want to read them? Which ones did you actually stop and read? While you're a writer, you are foremost a reader. You know what interests you. Does this description make you want to read the story? This is just a work in progress. Post your comments.

You want to get read? Take a few extra moments to be sure you're putting your story's best foot forward.

Next month we'll talk about presenting yourself!

Ask & Answer

And from the mailbox about my last Noticing Newbies newsletter, "It's Coming.... Oh and FYI, if you wish to ask a question that may be time sensitive, please email me directly. I may not check the Feedback submissions until I get ready to write my next newsletter three to four weeks later. *Wink*

From thekaryn: I never have time for much of anything, so forget a great deal of non-routine activities. Writing is routine, and submitting in-line used to be also. I need to start it back as a routine, the question being, when will I find time!

I've had times when I was so busy with work and life that writing got left behind. I felt like I was missing something important. I carved out an extra 15 minutes each day just by getting up 20 minutes earlier each morning. Of course, my creative period is early in the morning. You must determine when you're most creative and try to work that time frame into your schedule. Good luck.

From Odessa Molinari : Don't be shy! A good message for Newbies. I joined in July and jumped right in. I reviewed, I started a campfire with the writers I liked from that reviewing and I made friends I regularly correspond with. I entered every contest going and made more friends.

Good for you. I've always thought jumping in is a great way to kick-start your Writing.Com experience. May I add pace yourself. You'll probably find lots of activities to pull your time. Be wary you don't burn out. *Wink*

From Quick-Quill : There was a 24 (hour) newbie raid! I think this did a lot to encourage newbies! I love the SMs.

She definitely has a huge heart for Writing.Com and its members. *Thumbsup*

From Elle - on hiatus : Hi ya, as someone who has been here three years and just discovered Scroll *Blush*, I think this might be something that newbies might not discover so easily on their own. Since you asked for suggestions, there's one for ya. *Smile*

Thanks for the suggestion, Miss Elle. I have it scheduled for an upcoming NL, along with some other lesser publicized items. *Smile*
