The purpose of this newsletter is to highlight some of the current contests and activities on the site, help educate members on how to host contests and activities, and provide clues to submit quality entries to contests. Write to me if you'd like something in particular covered.

Jump on the Bandwagon!
Now that you can order physical merit badges, look at this as a new opportunity. You can create a new contest or activity and award these new and beautiful creations hot off the presses. You can read more about merit badges here: "Merit Badges and Achievements" Anytime something is new, it's fun to design a contest or activity around it. While we can't earn or win a PokeBall or a PillowPet from the site, these little merit badge gems can be fun to collect. Qualified merit badges can also add points to your Community Recognition number.
So not only are you able to offer reviews and gift points as prizes, think about adding a merit badge to the mix. Also, don't forget about our new members, make some friends and help them decorate their portfolio with a fun merit badge. I think some of the first merit badges I earned were for being in the top reviewers list. Devoting a lot of time and effort into quality reviews sent to fellow members can earn you a pretty purple reviewing badge.
Another way to earn a badge is to favorite Writing.Com Support  . Not only can you follow up to the minute news happening in our community, sometimes a little challenge mission is posted and if you follow the requirements, you can earn a badge! The last mission was posted Feb. 11, and all you had to do was review a newbie in the next 24 hours, then link the review in the comments and earn 500 gift points. If you reviewed more than five, you earned a merit badge. How easy is that? Not only did you get review rewards and meet new friends, but you also got a merit badge. If you like the idea of hosting a quick "mission" type challenge, post it in your newsfeed and see what happens. So Write On, Review On and Contest On!

It's quite simple: pick a title, create a poem.
Story must fit within the young adult section of a bookstore. For this contest it is going to mean the main point of view character needs to be between the age of 14 and 18. The plot should also reflect the publishing age range but remember, YA is a broad spectrum and allows quite a fair amount. However, rate based on WDC standards (it's possible to have an 18+ YA story). Deadline: March 2nd at 11:59 WDC time

Last month's question: How could we better help newbies in our community?
Quick-Quill  answered: I loved this new challenge of asking newbies for reviews. Matt Bird has been reading reviews and sees a trend that the newbies are quite good. I have sent review request to a couple with positive results. It helps them to be noticed and become more active.
Don Fern  suggested: A way to better help newbies is to stop referring to them as newbies. A phrase such as "new community members" could be used instead.
