It Gets Worse Before It Gets Better
I'm sure you've heard the phrase before... it always seems to get worse before it gets better. Writing is no different!

So, I have been going through this with health lately. I have been dealing with a sinus infection for approximately two weeks. For the first time in my life, I have actually been able to breathe despite the sinus infection, which is why I waited so long to go to the doctor. I thought I was getting better, then I got worse, then I got tolerable, and then I finally went to see the doc. The doc quickly gave me antibiotics, and I went from there.

This morning, I was doing ok. This evening... I could not breathe. Not at all. Not even one ounce! All this time, my nose has been normal-ish despite the icky infection, and the second I start taking the antibiotics, I plug up like a corked bottle of wine. Sad. I do know that I will get better, but apparently I need to go through this first. Yay for nasal spray!

And of course, my predicament got me to thinking. My writing has taken much the same pattern as my current sinus infection. I'm a bit wishy-washy at it, I finally get into something that I think is going to motivate me, and right when I think it's going to work, and then BOOM, I feel worse than ever. I start getting moving, and I fall on my face and pull away without meaning to... and then it is hard for me to get back to it. (I think this is evidenced by the three unfinished novels I have swimming around my port.)

I really don't think I'm alone in feeling like this.

I have a theory, though, and I am going to try it out this next month. They say it takes several times to make something a habit, so I am going to be doing my best to make writing a habit again. I am simply going to set my timers, and not allow myself to say no.

I am setting out to write again. Every day. In my blog. If I make it, then I do. And if I don't, I'm not going to run scared, I'm going to pick myself back up, and jump right back in. Feel free to join me, if you'd like! Here are the strategies I am going to use:

1. Set a daily timer: I am going to set a timer for the same time every day. This should (hopefully) get me into the habit, and prevent me from "forgetting". I forget a lot.

2. Don't take no for an answer: I am not allowed to turn it off. I can postpone it, if I am in the middle of something work-wise or otherwise. But I am not allowed to turn it off until I sit down at the computer to write.

3. I am not going to say I have to write a certain amount: I am not going to limit myself to a certain amount, nor am I going to say I have to write a certain amount. I think this would put additional pressure that I don't need.

So, join me! Let's all write. Every day. Some how or some way. *Smile* If you already write every day, challenge yourself another way.

Ask & Answer

Newsletter Feedback from "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (March 26, 2014):

Quick-Quill said, "I have to add one to last months characters and that is the MC in Shutter Island. The movie is about reality vs. crazy. It is the epitome of what crazy is to a normal person and reality is to a crazy person. Its a book/movie that needs to be seen."

Very cool. I will certainly take a look into it. A little madness is always appreciated!

Newsletter Feedback from "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (April 23, 2014):

dragonwoman said, "Love the idea of getting silly with it! I find it usually leads to sequels or entirely new stories."

Honestly, that's the most fun part. I like to change the song "Gettin' Jiggy With It" to "Gettin' Silly With It". Yes, I have my occasional evidence of lame.

This Week's Question:
They always say that the road to hell is paved with good intentions. I revealed that I always have intentions to write, but I do fail. So, my question is as follows: What motivates you? What keeps you going, and keeps you writing? Is it just a love of writing, or is it an escape? Another reason entirely?
