Are You Ready for NaNo?


National Novel Writing Month (NaNoWriMo, for short) is quickly approaching. Every November, writers all over the world unite with a common goal-- the write a 50,000 word novel in a month!

There are many different schools of thought about whether or not authors should prepare for NaNo. A lot of writers go into November without having written a word at all. They start with a clean slate and write whatever story comes off the top of their heads. Another group of writers, which I refer to as the "preppers," prepare some kind of outline, or at least some semblance of plot, before November.

Should you prep before NaNo starts? That's up to you. Different writers work differently. Some of us can write a semi-coherent novel without any prep work. Others have to have every detail worked out ahead of time. Here's the NaNoWriMo website's official stance:

"Traditionally, NaNoWriMo works best when you start a brand-new project. It may be an arbitrary distinction, but we’ve seen that novelists do better (and have more fun) when they’re free from the constraints of existing manuscripts. Give yourself the gift of a clean slate!

That said, we welcome all writers at any stage. Outlines, character sketches, and other planning steps are encouraged. Just be sure to only count words written during the month."

In other words, you don't have to plan your entire novel as your write it. You can do prep work ahead of time if you want!

Here at WDC, we have our own prep program for writers who want to start NaNo off on a very organized foot. It also helps develop the habit of writing every day, which you will definitely need to do to make your 50,000 word goal in November!

No matter what you decide-- prep or not-- writing a 50,000 word novel is an achievement that not everyone accomplishes in their life, so I suggest making the most out of it!
