About This Newsletter

The purpose of this newsletter is to share my thoughts, ideas, and experience with anything and everything relating to contests and activities. Information from me to you on entering and running activities here on Writing.Com.

Letter from the editor

If you've been around here for a while and are active in contests and activities, you may notice that there are very few which cater specifically to the LGBT+ community. You may also have noticed that there are some places to don't allow this genre to be entered in their contests or activities. So why are there so few contests geared toward this community and why do some people not allow it at all?

For many people, this genre isn't in their comfort zone. Many of us like to stay in that safe zone that we know but it can be beneficial to break out of that. If we were to include LGBT+ capabilities in more contests and activities, members would have the opportunity to push their own boundaries and see just what else they can create.


Why should you consider including LGBT+ in your next contest or activity?

*Starr* It will allow your entrants to branch out from their usual writing.

*Staro* Showing inclusivity can help get more participation.

*Star* There's already an awesome Merit Badge for the genre.

*Starg* You can gain more exposure to another common aspect of life.

*Starb* You can strengthen your skills as a writer.

*Starv* Because representation matters.


The biggest thing that should be thought about is just opening up the stage for the possibility of such stories in your contests and activities. Allowing members to try something new, or even if this genre is their comfort zone, could lead to more participation in your contest or activity.

My question for you this time: Do you incorporate LGBT+ in your contests or activities? Why or why not?


Question from before ("Contests & Activities Newsletter (March 11, 2015)" ): How do you use your newsfeed? Are you going to start using it any differently?


Elisa the Bunny Stik replied: I actually have used my newsfeed in the past to do informal research. Media literacy is a passion of mine, and I want to start teaching people how to better understand the news/avoid clickbait. So I typed up a note ("Note: *Penb**Peng**Penv* Informal survey ...") to get things started. The response was actually a bit better than I expected. Hopefully I'll get the next phase of research started so I can share that on the newsfeed as well. Aside from that, I do use it to share links to offsite pieces that discuss writing in some capacity. While I often discuss these pieces in my journal, I recognize that my journal makes the vast majority of even halfway sane people run for the hills
