I've come in contact with one of my favorite writers - followed her on *Facebook*, read her posts, made suggestions, commented and praised her writing. All positives, and it was very welcomed by her. Then, on one of her posts about a possible new book, I wrote that I wasn't the biggest fan of such a subject. Mind you, it was just my opinion. That was the last comment I made on her page. The author defended the possible book as if it were already written and who am I to even voice my opinion in such a negative way?!

As writers we are very sensitive - we poured out blood, sweat and tears into our writing - who dares say a bad word about it? Constructive criticism comes to be viewed as irrational opinions and low ratings with a decent review tend to pull on that string where we question the reviewer. It has happened many, many times! I've overreacted as well when I received a three star rating but the review doesn't suggest any improvement whatsoever.

Every one of us has their own way of reviewing and rating. If I don't see mistakes or think the writing is good as is, I'll give it a five star rating. That's just me. Many reviewers will only give out a five star rating if they think the writing is spectacular. They don't rate the contents they rate the writing overall. Still, it does feel like a stab in the heart when you get three stars and no suggestions as to the improvements.

A few years back I snooped through lizco252's portfolio and found an item with a single star rating only! Imagine my reaction when I saw that. I didn't even want to read the contents since I was familiar with her writing, but I did. This girl can write, so who in their right mind would give her such a low rating, right? Once I finished reading and did my review, I rated the item to my standards, a five star rating, even mentioned the low rating and the ridiculousness of it!

When she read my review, you think she just thanked me? She welcomed my rating? *Laugh* This girl yelled at me! I, yes, I, ruined the rating! She wanted it that way, because that was part of the fun. Go figure! What it thought me though had been a lesson well needed. Don't get too stressed out about a single rating or an overall rating after all the reviews come in. It really doesn't matter. What you want, what you need, and what you are here for in the first place are the actual reviews which help you improve your writing! That's the whole point! And if you're so worried about the rating and don't like seeing a low rating, you can always fix that by not allowing ratings on your written pieces. *Wink*
