A month is both a long and short time to work on a story. It's a type of contest or challenge I enjoy because there is that element of time plus more of a chance to cater to a little bit longer of a word count than one can expect from daily or weekly limits.
NaNoWriMo - This is a big one because it's specifically a month long challenge to the point it's even in the title. National Novel Writing Month held during November when writers take the challenge of trying to finish 50,000 words of a novel from start to finish. It's only one month in the year and the goal was to get people to just dedicate some time to get writing the story they have always wanted to write. Sure, we can write any time of the year but sometimes it helps to focus for a month in order to get first draft work done.
Monthly Contests - There are many contests that run one month at a time. Some are every single month of the year and others are periodic. There are even some that are more seasonal instead of being just one month in length. Many options to chose from as on this site the contests vary in genre, expectations, judges, and even the allowed word counts.
Downsides - Having a contest in mind to enter is a start but it doesn't get a story done. One downside to the month long contest the whole month long is a chance to get the story done and sometimes it just doesn't happen. There are many times that I've wanted to enter a monthly contest, gotten an idea but in the end, wasn't able to finish even though there was all of that time available. Whether it's a week or a month, the challenge exists to get something done.
While I run a weekly challenge, I have always been a fan of the month long options. The contest I created and run on rare occasion is one that I have people at least a month or more in order to enter along with a word count in the thousands range. I enter NaNoWriMo whenever I can and whether I make it to 50,000, only hit 30,000 or get over 100,000, it's a month of writing and what is better than that? Write for a month. Edit for a month. Focus for a month. That is what I like to do. What about you?
