The busy season is right around the corner and many of us will take some time off from our writing to spend the various holidays with family and friends. It doesn't mean we can't participate in some contests around the site.
In order to keep your creative juices flowing, you also need to keep up with your writing. It's not exactly like riding a bike. Over time, everything we learn gets rusty, we get rusty, and once we want to write again, it may take some time to get back into the swing of things. Trying to keep with it on a weekly if not a daily basis can be helpful. Notes, little scribbles here and there, a poem, a short story, anything to keep the need to write part of your routine.
Contests on WdC can be quite inspiriting for all of those. It doesn't have to be a novel each time you write something. Many have word limits which are under the 500 word count. That should be easy. Having competition to work against will give you that push to wanting to do great, not just good. However, that same competition can become very valuable over time.
We all have our different styles of writing and we have our own unique voice. In order to have your voice heard and understood, you'll need people who can relate to your writing or write for the same types of contests. That way, you're on the same page and can compare notes. Learn from each other and with each other.
Most writers are introverts and tend to hide behind the written word. We'd rather write than speak, preferring our seclusion over crowds. Hiding won't help you learn and expand your knowledge. Finding a writer friend who understands you as well as your style of writing can be and is invaluable. They can offer you so much help with only a few words. Since you already understand each other and get along, a writer friend won't hesitate to point out where your writing might need improving. You also need to be open minded and willing to take the criticism for what it is, help, and not get offended by another person's opinion. They can open your eyes to things which are easily overlooked, but matter a lot down the road.
On that note, go out there and look for that writer friend whom you can trust and rely on.
