Letter from the editor

"I always kept a diary -- not a diary like, 'Dear Diary, we got up at 5 AM, and I wore the weird hair again and that white dress! Hi-yeee!' I'd just write."
~Carrie Fisher

We all knew her as Princess Leia from the Star Wars movies, and it was a sad day when we lost her on December 27, 2016, but Carrie Fisher was one talented lady. She was a world renowned actress, a writer, and deep down, a witty comedian. Yes, a comedian. Despite her dark times, she turned it all around and came through it all with a smile. The best part for us is she shared those struggles by turning her dark times into humorous stories by writing about it.

What surprised me was how many books she had written. I only recently heard of her latest memoir, The Princess Diarist, which covered her teen years while filming the first movie, Star Wars. I had no idea that the movie Postcards from the Edge starring Meryl Streep and Shirley MacLaine was written by Carrie. She wrote a few memoirs and other works of fiction which were based on her life. The book, Wishful Drinking, another memoir of hers, was adapted into a one woman show. After watching a clip of it on YouTube, there was no doubt in my mind just how funny she was. She goes in-depth of what it was like to play Princess Leia and how everyone refers to her as that character. Here is one of my favorite stories she told while performing the one-woman show:

“When I got this job, I had to lose ten pounds. I was 105 at the time. Well no, to be fair now, I carried about fifty of those pounds in my face. So you know, what a good idea to give me a hairstyle that further widens my already wide face!”

This little story shows how she could take something negative about herself and turn it into something funny.

She not only entertained us through her writing and the Star Wars movies, but she also starred in other films. My favorite movie after Star Wars was, The Burbs, with Tom Hanks as her husband. Throughout the movie she showed her talent by being able to deliver a deadpan line and that’s what makes the movie a classic to watch because she had many of these gems. One line in the movie is delivered by Carrie and it's one of my favorites. It’s hilarious to watch the reaction between husband and wife, and I have it in my arsenal to use it myself one day:

“You were up at the crack of dawn watching a dog poop.”

The line was delivered with perfection -- her eyes wide and staring him down, waiting for an explanation. If you get the opportunity, check the movie out.

It boggled my mind when I checked out her accomplishments.

It’s interesting to note that even though she was a busy actress, she had the strength and confidence to write about her life. No matter how difficult those times were, she used humor to get through those tough situations. It also made her rich – just sayin’.

No matter what, we’ll always remember her as Princess Leia, so it’s appropriate to end this newsletter with the Star Wars theme done in an entertaining way. Keep your eyes open glued to this video. There are a few Star Wars actors who make an appearance -- even Carrie.

May the Comedy force be with you. Write on!
