The Long and the Short Contests

Which type of contest meets your writing goals?

Writing for contests, whether short or long, can help you to meet some of your writing goals.

Long Contests

Those can be long in time. Those are contests where you have at least one whole month or longer in time to write for. The amount of text can be fairly short, but since you're given ample time to edit, your text is expected to be well-rounded with few to zero mistakes.

They can ask for long stories or even novel submissions, where length stands for the length of your text.

Some long contests, that are usually activities such as NaNoWriMo, last a month and ask for a lot of writing. Quantity over Quality is the name of the game.

Short Contests

Flash Fiction falls under short contests as both the time for submitting as well as the text length you are allowed to submit is short. Those usually run within 24 hours.

Contests that give you one week to write a short story also fall under short contests in time.

Of course, contests asking for a short bit of text are short contests.

As a writer, you will find that both long and short contest types present you with unique challenges. Even if you arrived at Writing.Com with a sizable body of work, you will do well for yourself to try your hand at many contests. Since most contests come with at least one review for your entry, you will find out how your writing style affects another person. You will learn new words, appreciate other styles, and even find some writing buddies.
