 Welcome to the Noticing Newbies Newsletter! Our goal is to showcase some of our newest Writing.Com Authors and their items. From poetry and stories to creative polls and interactives, we'll bring you a wide variety of items to enjoy. We will also feature "how to" advice and items that will help to jump start the creation process on Writing.com.
We hope all members of the site will take the time to read, rate, review and welcome our new authors. By introducing ourselves, reviewing items and reaching out, we will not only make them feel at home within our community, we just might make new friends!

You might be thinking, Why am I receiving this newsletter? Or perhaps wondering if there are other newsletters available and how to sign up for them. Wonder no longer, because this week's edition of your Noticing Newbies Newsletter will hopefully shed a little light on the matter. And to be perfectly frank, I love getting newsletters in my mailbox. I may not always have time to read every one of them, but if I do, I can. Plus they are free! Hmmm.... perhaps I should also mention you might learn something you didn't know.   Okay, enough babbling from me. Let's get down to business.
First of all, here is a complete list of newsletters put out each week that are written by a staff of Writing.com moderators. Other well-written and informative newsletters are also available through various members of this community, but this week we will concentrate on the following:
Noticing Newbies
Everyone who becomes a member of the Writing.com community will automatically receive a copy of the Noticing Newbies Newsletter each week. The editors try to concentrate on topics that are helpful to the newcomers of the site.
Action/Adventure
Whether you seek adventure through written words or you yearn to create thrilling stories yourself, this newsletter will serve you well. Pick up great advice on how to make your writing believable while still making your reader's heart race anxiously with each twist and turn. Add some action to your tale to really spice things up. After all, we all like a little adventure, don't we?
Comedy
Do you like to laugh and make others laugh, too? Perhaps you're not too funny in person, but on paper you are hilarious. Whoever you are, whether you enjoy telling jokes or just need to be around people who make you laugh, this newsletter covers it all.
Drama
Drama creates tension... That sit-on-the-edge-of-your-seat anxiety. If you need any lessons on how to write sweaty-palm fiction, this newsletter could be for you.
Fantasy

Where do I sign up? you might ask. It's very easy! Look to the left of your screen under Site Navigation. Click on Member Tools and scroll down to Newsletters. Find the subtitle Manage Newsletter Subscriptions. There you go! It's easy as 1 - 2 - 3 ! Just click on the newsletter(s) you wish to arrive in your email weekly. If you decide later you don't wish to subscribe to a newsletter any longer, repeat the steps and uncheck the box next to the newsletter. Or you can go to My Account which is located just above Site Navigation to the left of your screen. You will find Manage Newsletter Subscriptions part way down the second column. Click and there are are!
Okay, so now let's say you have signed up for at least one newsletter. Would you like to send some feedback to the editor? You will notice at the end of each newsletter, there is a small window for readers to send in comments. Most likely, your feedback will be published in the newletter the following month. Or perhaps you have an item you'd like to have featured in a future newsletter. Enter your item number in the window labeled: Writing.Com Item ID To Highlight (Optional). There's no guarentee your item will be published, but hey, it's worth a try, right?
Are you curious about past newsletters? You can always go into "Writing.Com Newsletter Archives" and browse through hours and hours of editorials. This site can also be found by going into Newsletters, located in Member Tools.
Hopefully I have not confused you too much! It's very easy to sign up for a newsletter and just as easy to unsubscribe. And hey, it's free! Now go have some fun and pick out a few (or all, like me!) newsletters. You never know what you might learn in a future edition!

Excerpt: Like I said, I was always too busy psycho-analyzing him to pay any attention to him. I am – that is, was – a psychology professor. Of course I had been fired when the whole affair was uncovered, and the police soon came for me. Naturally, my first inclination was to hide. But then I thought, why deprive the nation of the truth? Why allow the media to take over and let them slander my name and pass unfair judgment, let them twist reality and leave it to them to decide what’s fact and what’s myth? I think I get most overwhelmed when I think about the long-term. "Oh no, I've only written this many pages in so-and-so amount of time, and my personal goal is to finish a novel by the end of the year!" I do much better when I write just for the sake of telling a story and having fun with it. When I'm trying to write twenty pages, I'll finish about two and give up, but when I'm just trying to put my thoughts on paper, I'll write about a dozen pages and not even realize it!
It's good you have goals. Perhaps when you feel pressured to write and can't get past two pages, you could branch off into another direction with your character(s) on a separate piece of paper and write until something sparks for you. Then go back to your original storyline, using a fresh idea, and see how far that will take you.

Hummm...what overwhelms me about writing? I guess the intensity of emotions that I feel when I'm writing my poetry, or the truth I learn about myself from the characters that come forth. I guess that makes the rejection aspect of the being a writer so nerve wrecking for me. But I'm going to write more this coming year too.
It's amazing, isn't it, how our very own writing can make us feel.

?What overwhelms you the most with your writing?
when i write, i just kinda zone out and see what falls. sometimes the emotion that hits the page is overwhelming. but it gets things out of my system so that i don't carry them around with me.

Sounds like you give it you all, Teena. I always think that if I can make myself cry from a story or poem I've written, it must be pretty good.

My writring is my outlet. Sometimes just facing the emotions that I am trying to get down..can be VERY overwhelming.

I'm a newbie and this site looks very complicated. I'd like to do some competitions but can't find any I like. I'm having trouble learning the ropes. Any advice?
No offense, but I feel a little cheated. It said registration was free but there's only so much you can do with the free account.
I love the feedback you can get on your items with this site.
If by now you are still having difficulty, please email me or any other Moderator and we will certainly point you in several good directions. Yes, this place can be a bit overwhelming in the beginning! There's so much one can do here, and the site offers a variety of interests. Please, do not hesitate to send an email out to one of us. One suggestion I'll quickly make is to sign up for the Contest Newsletter if you like competitions. Just follow my instructions in this newsletter and hopefully, that will get you started in the right direction.
