About This Newsletter

Hello, everyone. I am ~ Santa Sisco ~ . I'm one of the three permanent editors of the Noticing Newbies newsletter.

I aim to ensure you have a smooth transition into the site. I still remember my first day here. "Bitem?" Do I have to be a computer programmer to put my writing on here? *Laugh* Forty-eight hours later, I realized it was a case of easy when you know how!. My biggest mistake when I joined was that I didn't take the time to read the "Writing.Com 101. I was excited and wanted to do everything the same day. Sound familiar? *Smile*
You will see my contributions every four weeks, and I hope they help you with using this great site.

My fellow permanent editors are Brooklyn and Sara♥Jean .

Letter from the editor

I’m sure you must have noticed the different colored cases used as portfolio icons! My icon is blue to denote a moderator. ~ Santa Sisco ~

Let’s have a look at the different color cases, and how to obtain them.

Gray portfolio icon. *FolderGr* Registered Member.

This is the entry level for WDC. You have registered an account and started your WDC journey. You can take part in all activities that your free or paid membership level allows. Once you’ve had a good look around our site, I expect most newbies are itching to post their first item in their portfolio at this point. Once you have posted your first item, you will see your case color change instantly to black.

Black portfolio icon. *FolderBL* Registered Author.

You Have at least one item in your portfolio and you are now a registered author on WDC. Most portfolios you see in WDC are this color. You have full use of the community tools that your membership level allows, and you will have an item in your port which could earn you your first review. *Smile*

As a registered author, you will probably start to make friends on WDC quickly and become active within the community. Your level of community involvement will depend on the time you have to spend here. However, it is very rewarding to connect with so many like-minded people. *Bigsmile*

The vast majority of our members have a black case and settle down to do what they joined the site to do – write and review! *Smile* Members who become active in the community and embrace all that we have to offer can find themselves with a yellow case.

Yellow portfolio icon. *FolderY* Preferred Author.

Staff selects members for promotion to Preferred Author. You will be active in the community and have positive interactions with other members. You will be an active reviewer of other member’s work and have a variety of items in your port. Quantity and quality of items, reviews, and ratings are all taken into account for promotion to this level. If you see a yellow suitcase on a member’s portfolio icon, you should be confident that you can approach that member and receive a positive welcome. *Smile* They will also have a fair understanding of how WDC works and be able to point you to where to get help if needed.

If you want the official criteria, look here: "Promotion to Preferred Author

Blue portfolio icon. *FolderB* Moderator.

Staff selects members for promotion to Moderator. All moderators have been preferred authors and so have a good understanding of the site and technical issues. We were seen to be extra helpful and knowledgeable as preferred authors and met the other criteria staff use to select moderators. All moderators should be approachable and treat you friendly and fairly. We don’t have all the answers, but we do know where to find them. *Laugh*

If you want the official criteria, look here: "Promotion to Moderator

Purple portfolio icon. *FolderV* Senior Moderator.

Senior Moderators are all selected from moderators and hold the highest position achievable on WDC. There are only a handful of senior moderators, as this position is held by a select group of extremely dedicated writers/moderators. Their journey on WDC has led them to be the very best we can all aspire to be. They hold the highest level of responsibility a non-staff member can attain.

Red portfolio icon. *FolderR* Staff.

Our staff does the day-to-day running and maintenance of the site. Just like the executive officers of a company, they formulate and implement the policies and procedures of the site. You will also see them announcing site promotions and contests. I often refer to WDC as a journey for writers; staff are our drivers and navigators. *Bigsmile*

White portfolio icon. *FolderW* Memorialized Author.

A white case honors the memory of members who have passed away and preserves their work for members to read. These accounts are locked. *Angel*

We also have a memorial forum to honor our members who have passed away.

From "Noticing Newbies Newsletter (September 13, 2017)
papadoc1 commented:
Hey Sisco,
Immediately after GoT had a chance to wind down, I decided to get "back to my roots", and found out that reviewing/encouraging Newbies here on WDC was a fantastic way to do so! Oh, the hours I have spent, enjoying people's first steps here, and knowing full well that this was you & I once! Truth be told, I've been having a great time, and seeing all the names up on your Suggested Reading list made my day. *Bigsmile* Altogether, this year’s crop of rookies is really something! Looks like a win-win-win across the board!
Keep on keepin' on!
Dr J

Thank you for your comments. As you have been here longer than I, you might have been the member who encouraged me! *Bigsmile* I agree, we have a wonderful batch of newbies this year and I’m sure they will go on to be the old-timers of the future WDC. *Laugh* We certainly get our fair share of talented and enthusiastic writers and potential writers. Thanks again for taking the time to pass on your comments.
